  1. Yeah, I was too. It's a common thing, unfortunately.
  2. So, I don't know about David Benatar, who he is or anything, but that website... has pictures of people who've been hit in schools, all around the world, and scans of news articles, comics, and commentary on the subject, going back a long time. The website is probably maintained as a store of pornography.
  3. @ empyblessing A sexual paraphilia is not a sexual orientation. Research suggests that homosexuality, in its degrees, is caused by hormonal effects in utero. Sexual paraphilias, like foot or bondage fetishes, are not well understood. But I think it's fair to guess they come from adverse early childhood experiences.
  4. Wow, nathan. Your posts are so creative.
  5. Haven't got a movie to review, but I recently saw a preview for a movie coming out this year. It looks good, so I figured I would post it here. It's called The Place Beyond the Pines. It's scheduled for release on March 29, 2013, and it stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes. Based on the trailer I am tempted to compare it with Harsh Times or Gone Baby Gone, but it's hard to say. Looks really good, and clearly relates to some ideas that come up around here. The indispensibility of fathers for one, and police violence and corruption for another. [View:http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=G07pSbHLXgg]
  6. They invented floors so that children could throw food on them. They invented arms so that you could pick up the food and throw it away, like a mature adult. I'm not so sure about the idea of being patient with someone who wants to slap a child. Patience is not something they're showing the child, so they haven't earned it from you.
  7. That genes may influence criminal behavior has been the subject of many threads.
  8. Saw this in the news earlier today. It's sad he could be so great and yet so despairing.
  9. They all seem real to me.
  10. A lot of people do think murder is moral, as long as the one doing it has the right badge.
  11. Yes, indeed it is. Stefan realized that and has replied twice. And I think he would agree that the question of the extent to which child abuse underlies humanity's problems is very important business. That's probably why he has devoted hundreds of hours to discussing it.Yes, indeed. Yes, very important business, indeed.Do you have anything of value to contribute at all to this discussion?Yes.
  12. I'm confused as to how this game would work. Do you plan to incude graphics of children being hit?
  13. Yes, indeed it is. Stefan realized that and has replied twice. 14. Ah, yes, very important business. Blablabla.

  16. I'm not sure about making more than one appointment, before you've seen the therapist. Establishing trust was difficult for me to do in therapy, and I don't think I would have been comfortable in committing to any length of time, early on. Something I want to add is that you aren't broken. There isn't anything wrong with you. You made it this far in life, which is farther than a lot of people make it, and clearly you were going uphill all the way. I think, probably you don't have father issues, but just a crap dad. I think, probably you aren't negative and depressed, just more self aware than average.
  17. From the previews this movie looked racist and violent in the extreme. What was your impression, before you went to see it?
  18. Uncle.
  19. Hahaha! []
  20. It's hard not to feel pressured in a thread that is someone's extended game of Say Uncle. What you're feeling might not be yours.
  21. What I wrote is the expression for the conditional probability P(both white | first white). The MHP does involve conditional probability. It's more difficult to evaluate than in your problem, because the host's action is not random.
  22. I wish I had some suggestions for you. Since I don't, here's a bump.
  23. Yes. [notworthy] Good post.
  24. @ Waster Unless I'm mistaken, that problem is different from the MHP in that the first draw is always random: it affects the probablity of the desired event (both white). The probability of both whites is 1/3. When the first white is drawn, we condition on that outcome, the probability of which is 1/2. P(both white, first white) / P(first white) = P(both white) / P(first white) = (1/3) / (1/2) = 2/3
