I agree with what you said but the last sentence got me confused. Because if you learn to fight its not unarmed, your body is the weapon. I think this is where people are missing the point, you are turning your body into a weapon. By practicing and exercising your body to be really good at hitting people . I personally don't find that appealing as an adult i have been in zero fights or altercations. I wouldn't want to turn my body into a weapon, i rather prevent dangerous situations. I don't think its immoral to learn to fight, its just something i wouldn't do. ----------------------------------------------------------**********update ----------------------------------------------------------He beat up another womanhttp://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-Sports/2014/08/16/War-Machine-ApprehendedIt would be more effective and fruitful to use self-knowledge to find the source of anger. Venting anger with violence doesn't necessarily process anything if you don't know the source of the anger. In fact, in concealed carry courses, it is recommended that people with anger management issues consider not pursuing the CCW license until addressing the anger. I do agree that we need to stress the concept of defense with regard to self defense. You don't carry a gun because you want to shoot people, fight crime as a vigilante, or over-throw the government (common pro-control sophists illustrate gun owners in this light). The foremost reasoning is defense of one's self and property. This philosophy should also be applied to learning martial arts. It is unarmed self-defense.

What do you guys think of this?
Udacity's stuff has been mostly free unless you want some extra help from a coach.
They are coming up with this program where they teach you the core skills you need to get a job. They give you a coach to guide you. They also help you build a portfolio.
Its probably going to cost ~100 a month.
What do you guys think.
Im going to sign up for the iOS development one.
Im already learning on my own but i have to say that this sounds like the perfect program to learn.
Its all I wanted to do in college, have enough skills to build my own stuff or get a job.
---------------
Udacity is a for-profit educational organization founded by Sebastian Thrun, David Stavens, and Mike Sokolsky offering massive open online courses(MOOCs).[3] According to Thrun, the origin of the name Udacity comes from the company's desire to be "audacious for you, the student".[4][5] While it originally focused on offering university-style courses, it now focuses more on vocational courses for professionals.
Sebastian Thrun (born May 14, 1967) is an educator, programmer, robotics developer and computer scientist from Germany. He is CEO and cofounder of Udacity, an institution he cofounded with David Stavens and Mike Sokolsky. He is a Google VP and Fellow, and a part-time Research Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University.

I don't think so. My strongest desire was to be able to walk around school not being afraid of who might be around the corner. Now seeing the bullies back off and leave me alone felt great, I never did turn the tables and try and intimidate them. I simply became a more difficult target.
So if you could go back in time you would do differently ?
I know the ideal is to have good parents that and good relationships.
-
I began learning martial arts in Jr High. I grew up faster than most of my class and became a target for bullies trying to prove themselves. I studied Shotokan and Aikido. One of my strongest memories from then was the concept of blocks as strikes. There were a couple fights where I used an opponents forward momentum to throw them. Another time a bully actually threw a roundhouse kick at my face. I threw a block and made good contact with his shin. The fight was instantly over and he limped away, although he tried to hide it. Of course telling the "authorities", i.e. teachers and principals the result was not positive. The "authorities" did nothing and the bullies sought retribution. I later shifted to studying Tai-Chi.
As for the firearms, I'm not convinced that when the "cheese" runs out the entitlement crowd will just peacefully accept that. But I agree, it's best to avoid dangerous areas.
Back to my childhood days I have to wonder what kind of childhood those bullies had.
I think its justified that you learned to that fighting style to intimidate the bullies.
I also started working out when i was younger to intimidate bullies.
-
That doesn't prove causation. Just about everybody has had a "non-peaceful childhood", so with that logic we could conclude that everything from painting to carpet cleaning to making a philosophy podcast is caused by unprocessed childhood trauma. But clearly that is not the case.
I know i can't prove causation, that is why i use the words "might" and "i think" .
Its all based on my belief that violence stems from childhood trauma.
If you watched all stefs videos on this subject and still disagree and have not called in.
Im not going to pretend to have a conversation with you about this subject. Im done talking to you.

I know a guy who was an accomplished kickboxer / muay thai figher, having fought for the world champion title in his weight class division, and although he is now retired, he's defeated all 4 or 5 of the last world champions (though they weren't world champions at the time). He was also a kickboxing coach for about a year. He's one of the least aggressive persons I know.
Again people.
If i may, I don't think that is anyones stance.
Stef made a good point when he said no one has ever emailed or called me and said "Im a fighter and i had a peacefully childhood."
That is the main point here, that if you are into fighting you might have some unprocessed childhood trauma.
I can't really make generalizations because there are always exceptions but that is what i think the main theory/point stef made.
If you disagree, call stef up. You will be put into the front of the line.
It would be interesting to hear your points on it, discussions on text can be hard to follow.

An example of what faster processing power can accomplish:
To represent a point in space you need six degrees of freedom. Three direction (x,y,z) and three orientation. I took a class on robotics and several more on kinematics. To locate the end point of a member you need to calculate the effect each joint has on that end point. Every joint usually adds a degree of freedom. Robotic arms can have any number of degrees of freedom, but any more than six is considered redundant and is avoided unless the extra joint is absolutely required. Your arm has seven: three in the wrist, three in the shoulder and one at the elbow. If you know the joints position (linear/angular) you can calculate the end point. And vice versa.
These equations form a matrix and there are usually a lot of trig functions.
The reason I’m bringing this up is a topic we briefly touched upon was the Jacobian matrix, which is the derivative (Calculus) of the above matrix to calculate the position/orientation of the end of the arm. So there’s even MORE trig functions:
“The time derivative of the kinematics equations yields the Jacobian of the robot, which relates the joint rates to the linear and angular velocity of the end-effector.”
Our computers aren’t yet powerful enough to calculate these massive Jacobian matrices in real-time.
Your brain does this easily.
Yes but isn't being human more than just moving joints ?
An animal can also move joints, it is a very specific theory that is posted in the link.

I can speak for myself, as one who has studied a couple forms of martial arts and as someone who is licensed to carry a firearm and does. None of those things, learning how to fight, getting acclimated to being hit, learning to fire a gun with the sounds of gun fire close around, none of those things has made me a more violent person.
I don't think most people make that case. I think what stef says is that if you are in a relatively safe environment and you practice fighting its most likely because of some past trauma.
I don't think learning to defend yourself is bad if you are in a dangerous environment.
Stef has more than 3 videos on this topic some callers made those points and stef responded.

Just finished watching it.
It was a really good video the hypothesis is very well argued for.
It really sucks that all these genius men are idiots when they choose a wife.
To die of overworking to satisfy the money lust of these evil women, thats horrible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity
I personally don't think so.
It seems to me that people and most scientist don't understand ethics and how important childhood is to a humans development. If that is true how could they replicate a human brain?
I may be incorrect but don't some scientist say that faster computing will eventually lead to a singularity ?
How is a faster processor suppose to lead to a computer being self aware?
Even if a processor is billions of times faster wouldn't it need some kind of software to actually be self aware?

I had this discussion on the chat and on Skype with some fdr members.
I don't like the word because to me it has a relation to a hierarchy in primitive societies. (or animal kingdom)
Its usually the dominate male who impregnates all the females and rules by using intimidation or alliances .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_(ethology)
But some people on the boards think that in the future the alfa male would be the most virtuous and intelligent male...
My response was why use the word ? Why can't we just describe what that person is.
Why can't we say that person is our leader or that person is sexually desired by all females.
Also in the current definition there has to be force or intimidation; intimidation by forming alliances.
Also I think the word Alfa is different than the word Alfa Male because Alfa is also used to describe when something is first or in the top. Since its the first letter in the greek alphabet.
I heard stef say that he wants to be the Alfa philosopher and i think that is a good use of the word because he wants to be the best, in my mind he is.
You don't hear him saying i want to be an alfa male. Usually people who say that are really primitive and violent.
Read about a post that i created, an MMA fighter who almost killed his ex girlfriend (porn star), has a shirt brand that says "I do alfa male shit" ....

This is absolute horror.
Maybe Stef should re-evaluate his appearances on Joe Rogan.
Of course UFC does not explicitly endorse Thug Culture...but...hm...
I feel all this "MMA helps you cope with your aggression" is wishful thinking and Joe is proud of a certain machismo & drug use attitude.
I know this is unrelated, but Stef should be careful who he endorses.
The MMA fighter was actually on the Joe Rogan show.
I can't really listen to Joe Rogan anymore.

This might be a little too obvious and predictable for fdr but i thought it was interesting, especially since the MMA fighter is still on the run.
I think it would be interesting to research about both of their childhoods.

Personal lifeKoppenhaver was born in Simi Valley, California. His German-American father was an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department and his Mexican mother worked as a nurse, but she later became a stay-at-home mom.[4] Due to his mother's drug addiction, Koppenhaver would often take care of his little brother and sister.[4] When he was thirteen, Koppenhaver unsuccessfully performed CPR on his father, only to witness him die during the process.[5]
In August 2000, Koppenhaver attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, for two years before being expelled for "poor behavior".[6] While attending, he majored in biology.[6] In an interview, Koppenhaver claimed that he had been earning high marks at The Citadel.[4]
Koppenhaver dated porn star Christy Mack.

You can live on an American diet and still feel good about yourself, even as a fatty. If eating tasty food makes you happy, yeah, they have a point.
You are comparing make up to something unhealthy like fast food.
Yes i agree thank you for making that point.

I don't have a set schedule for work but if you guys make a date ahead of time i could ask for the day off.

aFireInside,
What happens for you when someone is rude or insulting and why do you think it has nothing to do with you?
-Tony C.
It makes me feel nervous and scared. Most of the time its things that i have no control over, like pricing or timing of their food.... etc
I feel like they take their anger out on me.
Also there are times when i mess up or mumble up my speech. But those times i accept that its my fault.
What kind of things do they say to you?
They say things like i don't know anything... etc mostly things insulting my working style
I've read that Starbucks has highly-dedicated customer service training. So if you're using fast-food as a way to learn to deal with toxic people, Starbucks is almost certainly better equipped to teach you.
I'm not doing this to "deal" with anything I just need money to move out.
-
I'm working hard on my customer servicing skills.
As you can expect there is about 20 percent of customers who are rude.
The approach that I'm currently taking is to do the best to satisfy them and understand them.
And understand that any insults I receive has nothing to do with me.
In my personal life I'm taking toxic people out of my life, so i was just wondering what you guys think.

thanks guys

I'm trying to learn more about this subject.
Is the reptilian brain the subconscious mind ? I think that stef uses them interchangeably.
Also are there more podcast on this subject ?
Here are the ones that I have listened to.

Reptilian complex[edit]The reptilian complex, also known as the R-complex or "reptilian brain" was the name MacLean gave to the basal ganglia, structures derived from the floor of the forebrain during development. The term derives from the fact that comparative neuroanatomists once believed that the forebrains of reptiles and birds were dominated by these structures. MacLean proposed that the reptilian complex was responsible for species-typical instinctual behaviors involved in aggression, dominance, territoriality, and ritual displays.
Paleomammalian complex[edit]The paleomammalian brain consists of the septum, amygdalae, hypothalamus, hippocampal complex, and cingulate cortex. MacLean first introduced the term "limbic system" to refer to this set of interconnected brain structures in a paper in 1952. MacLean's recognition of the limbic system as a major functional system in the brain was not widely accepted among neuroscientists, and is generally regarded as his most important contribution to the field. MacLean maintained that the structures of the limbic system arose early in mammalian evolution (hence "paleomammalian") and were responsible for the motivation and emotion involved in feeding, reproductive behavior, and parental behavior.
Neomammalian complex[edit]The neomammalian complex consists of the cerebral neocortex, a structure found uniquely in higher mammals, specifically humans. MacLean regarded its addition as the most recent step in the evolution of the mammalian brain, conferring the ability for language, abstraction, planning, and perception.

I can make a road trip to California, whether it be on a weekend during school or on a break. I have a 3 day weekend on Labor Day, maybe then?I'd prefer to do it after school begins because I'm pretty busy for the summer right now.
I am so down.

I'm in Orange county, and I know some people in San Diego who might be interested. What sort of meetup did you have in mind?
I'm in L.A. for the most part so I'm down.
Hey guys there is this duck park that i think its pretty cool.

I think it would be a good location to meet.
We could talk under a tree or walk and talk.

Watch on at 11:32 , Introjection?
The whole movie shows a lady running. Maybe it means nothing but for some reason its a really classic movie.

Nice!, do you have a demo video? I want to see it but unfortunately i don't have an android device.
Can you explain in more detail what you felt when you defooed?
For example: did it give you more energy ?
Interesting documentary about the brain
