  1. I save my Facebook comments for groups where they are appropriate, just like my tailor my in-person speech for my audience.
  2. https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/36511-donator-statuspremium-content-information/#entry335622
  3. There are ranges, I don't know how it works, just that I got popped silver for a single donation once, and changed later when I went to monthly.
  4. There are two different ways to earn badges, monthly donations or one time.
  5. Shakedown artists and opportunists that can turn small weaknesses into cash have existed for decades. The pros are politicians. The amateurs are confidence tricksters petty thieves.
  6. There's more to gain from less work for those who manipulate and threaten, so why would they be attracted to philosophy?
  7. There is no empirical evidence that Stef reads the forums, but it seems clear that MMD forwards or summarizes individual items.
  8. Christian: the branch of Abrahamic religions that believes in the divinity of Jesus. Holy book: The Bible Muslim: the branch of Abrahamic religions that believes that Muhammad was a prophet of God (and a number of early prophets are shared with Judaism and Christianity, including Cain, Abel, Abraham, Daniel, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc.). Holy book: The Quran.
  9. The first time I responded, there was only a thread title and no posting to respond to. There was no conversation being interrupted.
  10. And my point is that few individuals want to invest in this. Yes, it's possible, but it's not trivial. Is it probable that free-thinking individuals would do such a thing? They are far more likely to want to build a community-sized power plant or something more productive than a stand-off weapon (nuclear or biological) that is continental in scope. Free-thinking individuals are far more likely to invest in watchdogs to prevent people from making such things.
  11. The "free rider" problem is people that want us to consume time on issues that don't deserve serious attention. It was a reference to another thread. There *is* a need to be a dick about it:
  12. They are lifeboat questions (wacky ones at that) and are demonstrating the real "free rider" problem that exists on these boards.
  13. A little more Nate Silver crow: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-i-acted-like-a-pundit-and-screwed-up-on-donald-trump/
  14. Because their development is so incredibly expensive, and few individuals would ever commit a significant portion of their wealth into such an endeavor directly.
  15. Stealth. To surprise each case unique up on them.
  16. Here's my approach, and a universal when it comes to using force to end a life: "The circumstance that justifies lethal force is the immediate, otherwise unavoidable, danger of death or grave bodily harm to oneself or the innocent." Having a baby doesn't usually rise to this standard unless the baby directly threatens the life of the mother.
  17. Are you going to pay him, or are you a free rider? *runs away fast*
  18. Problem is that this is a "knowing what I know now" kind of question. I'd embark on self-knowledge sooner, sure, but nothing in my life then was encouraging me to do so at the right time.
  19. It is widely accepted that parents take their too-young children into the bathroom with them even if they are not of the "appropriate" gender. No one second-guesses this and everyone was polite about it. Maybe I am too old. Of course, the other men were greatly amused when I stood guard outside the stall where my daughter was happily singing about what she was doing... Government has no need to get involved. They already have "disturbing the peace" for people that are disruptive.
  20. The added complex assertion (without evidence) that rocks have souls has no explanatory power over how rocks interact with the rest of the universe, and therefore can be ignored in order to save precious fleeting brainpower for considering things that *do* have an effect on other things.
  21. I've long maintained that the voting system here is not really a good gauge of anything. There is no objective criteria how anyone chooses to vote (and most who can do not vote).
  22. It might be, but in general you want the same sound to come to your ears from a few directions, direct, and reflecting off nearby surfaces. Listening to sound in a truly anechoic chamber is downright creepy in comparison.

  24. Phase differences relate to the same sound taking different paths to get to you. https://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr08/articles/phasedemystified.htm
  25. Perhaps I misspoke or was unclear. Stereo gets you a direction, but stereo over time can get you distance. It takes that "over time" element to get distance from natural effects like echo and reverberance. I think we are in agreement about the mechanism and effect.
