Scientism? Is that really a thing?
shirgall replied to Bleak Morn's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Scientism is supposed to be the misapplication of terminology to give a statement special authority, like when people say "Science tell us". It has evolved over the years but even the original Wikipedia article is pretty shallow: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Scientism&oldid=577508 -
An authoritarian telling people it's okay to be a bully? I'm not sure who that would assuage and I don't think I like who it would motivate.

How Trump could defeat the Federal Reserve without congress
shirgall replied to john cena's topic in Miscellaneous
It does, however, seem more likely that a bipartisan cabinet would be in order. What sort of appointments would take the wind out of Hillary's sails? Which ones would improve negotiations with Congress? People have already joked about Cruz as attorney general.- 3 replies

Yeah, Nate made some bad calls in this cycle. The article has a fact in error. The first female Presidential Candidate was Victoria Woodhull in 1872, not Janey-come-lately Hillary Clinton in 2016. The first female (and first Jew) to recent an actual electoral college vote was Tonie Nathan in 1972. I knew Tonie. She was a fireball. Tonie would have eaten Hillary for lunch.

Faux outrage from Fauxcahontas? Why are you allocating your valuable attention to it? I always thought she wanted to be Bernie's vice president, but you never know.

My employer spent valuable stockholder dollars self-examining on this question and found there to be no there there, but nonetheless it would be more harmful to the stock price to not know if there was any there there. Known knowns beat known unknowns in the marketplace of perception.

Plenty of evidence. Children are indoctrinated into religions the world over. The people I know that grew up without indoctrination never "got the bug". Others simply choose to join the religion that their spouse is for the sake of not confusing offspring. Others who were kidnapped from their parents and raised by others adopt the religion of their captors. Religion is not inherent in anyone, it comes from trusted others who exploit that trust to spread a knowledge virus.

What is also instructive is Hitchens lifelong journey away from socialism. He never gave it up, but he sure got more skeptical as he got older. As far as "Morality comes from us; the state claims to have invented it on our behalf." I would try it instead as "Morality comes from us; but the state claims it must manage it on our behalf." Not an exact transcription, but more apt.

Why aren't men called SLUTS

Because men know who the gatekeepers are. -
And the disputed quote of Ghengis Khan this Conan line is from is also K-selected: "The greatest joy for a man is to defeat his enemies, to drive them before him, to take from them all they possess, to see those they love in tears, to ride their horses, and to hold their wives and daughters in his arms."

How best to respond to panhandlers?
shirgall replied to Bleak Morn's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Offer to have them join you for lunch. I had zero takers when I worked in downtown Portland, OR. -
There is some difficulty getting empirical data in both categories, so the only thing people really have to go on is how much someone is deviating from the norm and how much they draw attention to that. That kind of behavior causes concern among all those with in-group preference. A desire to "freak out the squares" is a psychological phenomenon I haven't looked into very much, but I know it's pretty off-putting. http://www.opencarry.org/an-honest-look-at-crime-stats/ http://extranosalley.com/?p=48866 http://www.usnews.com/debate-club/should-people-be-allowed-to-carry-guns-openly/open-carry-deters-crime https://news.stanford.edu/2014/11/14/donohue-guns-study-111414/ http://www.ovc.gov/pubs/forge/sexual_numbers.html http://victimsofcrime.org/media/reporting-on-child-sexual-abuse/statistics-on-perpetrators-of-csa http://childprotection.lifetips.com/tip/117237/sex-offender-statistics/sex-offender-statistics/characteristics-of-offenders-who-commit-violent-crimes-against-children.html

How Taxation is Not Theft
shirgall replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Wasn't much of a choice for me. I moved to where the jobs were, but I can't sell my old house (I tried, ended up renting it out) and as a result haven't really been able to buy a new one, so I'm renting here too. Year to year my rent just increased 10%. -
