  1. So I have a question for you: Why Self-Knowledge?

Work to increase your self knowledge if you would like your current situation to be different than it is.

an alternative question which should maybe get just as much consideration if considerations are to be had, is "why stay the same?"

  2. Hi Tom!

For what it's worth, I would be very interested to check it out. It sounds like a very cool project :)

As far as the metaphor goes, it's empirically testing out rational virtues as a philosopher, focusing on action rather than theory, correct? I think the canary is a great symbol of that. I really like it a lot. As far as people understanding, I know that some people won't get it, but that's because so many people don't read or try to understand what's on the page in front of them.

-Canaries were phased out about 30 years ago. I think as long as the tagline is easily recognizable it should be okay. It is indeed a perfect metaphor, but I can't think of a better one using more current relative terms.

As a web developer, I've noticed this. People, most of the time, will not understand what to do without an incredible amount of pushing in the right direction. Like giant arrows on the page animated pointing to a button you need them to push to continue. But I think that's going to apply to most ideas people will come up with.

-This seems to stem from the current predominant style of education (someone directly telling students what to do) which only enforces parroting, not the intuition required to say "I don't know what to do here, let me try to figure it out myself"

I've seen heat map tests done where you could see where people click on a page the most, and they just click on the highest contrast thing on a page. People clicked often on a heading on a blue background with white text saying, basically, "fill out the form below".

The best way to get people familiar with a brand or concept is through video, where they can be completely passive while information is dumped into their brains.

I think this applies to me as well, and I'm sure most people in the first visit to a site. So, just speaking with a couple years of experience (not an expert), I would stick with the name that resonates best with you and that you will be excited to promote under that name.

Is "Freedomain Radio" a good name? I didn't know what it meant for a couple years, lol.

-I thought it was a conjunction of freedom and main for a while.

  3. ...Regrets are usually around things you could have done better,...

If you couldn't have done better, or differently (if it was out of your control), I don't think regret is justified. I'm not saying you can control if you have feelings of regret, but 'logically speaking' you shouldn't harbor any feelings of regret about a situation you can't control.

  4. I would not be in a relationship with someone that has the person I want to be with, "inside of someone else"

(just expressing how i personally would see the situation given the details you mentioned. I don't want to imply that you shouldn't be with her)

  5. Even if we grant you that science is going about this the wrong way it really doesn't matter. As I said before where creativity comes from will not remain a mystery forever. Whether it comes from what is commonly believed currently or is completely different once you understand it you can recreate the creative process in the form of 1s and 0s.

If science is going about it the wrong way, how will we ever understand it enough to generate it ourselves? Just to be clear here though, I'm not saying I believe we'll never be able to 'create' something that can channel creativity. According to this blog post, though, it's not likely to come from 1s and 0s.

  6.  Okay, can you at least give me some sources then? I mean, what have you read about it (books or online articles)?

The only author I've been reading on the subject so far is Dr. Bernardo Kastrup. The worldview he's discussing rationally accounts for the current scientific knowledge we have as well as offers a rational explanation for many of the mysteries and paradoxes that current scientific thought cannot and seemingly will never be able to account for.

  7. Well, so far it isn't an info, but mere assertion without reasoning or evidence, or explanation what exactly the terms mean. I'm happy to hear the whole reasoing behind if you want to make another threat, so not to derail this one any further. But I have to say it really bugs me a little, when you someone makes very bold claims contrary to what is commonly held as true and accurate and then neither makes a good case for it nor explains when asked. I mean, in that case, why make a remark at all in the first place?

I completely understand Robin. Like I said. This kinda stuff is quite new to me so I can't relay it too well but upon my initial reading of it, it made perfect sense (otherwise I wouldn't be making such claims that I can't currently explain well)Kinda like reading UPB and 'getting it' but not being able to accurately convey the message to someone critical of it.
  8. I don't want to draw too far away from the intent of the post, just wanted to avail the info that neurosciences have made very little concrete progress and aren't likely to do so going about it the way they are.

As for never working, I'm an artist at heart. I would love to create all day.

Note: I've only recently been reading up on all this about the conscious so it's not to clear to myself yet either.

  9. As I understand this so far, neuroscience isn't coming up with much evidence that the brain's activity directly correlates to the experiences of the mind. (Contrary to that, if anything)

Regardless, human brains are terrible at computing. It's kinda why we invented calculators/computers. Why would we wanna make a copy of something we needed to supplement anyway?

  10. Bill "So what, do you wanna fight me or something? Cause I'll destroy you"

Me "yeah I do actually. I wanna fight you in the octagon. I won't fight you at work but I will fight you legally in a gym" (I fight for sport)

Any idea why you wanted to elevate the interaction from conversation to physical altercation?

  11. Ah, I think I get your perspective better now, RJ. Though isn't it it still a perception (you felt) that she's deliberately attempting to diminish the positivity of the participants.

You can also interpret the post as her wanting to get across the message that she feels best when she is "constantly taking the challenge" and others might as well.

  12. I'll play devil's advocate here in red to explain a bit better about what I meant in my post above.

I think it will be pretty simple. You just have to establish a few things in the conversation. First ask him if he knows of the research does he agree with the findings.

"They didn't do the science on my kids, I know my own kids better than those scientists."

Second ask him if he believes that it is possible to have exception to rules.

"not unless I make the exceptions to the rules for my kids. my house, my rules"

Third as him if he believes that spanking is generally a good thing for children.

"yes. it shows them how to respect their elders"

Then you simply ask him if he believes the science is accurate and there are exceptions to rule then doesn't it logically follow this belief that spanking is good for children is simply his personal opinion. If he says this is not just his opinion and points out other people have the same opinion then ask him is it possible for multiple people to have the same opinion that has no baring on reality. If he says everyone he knows was spanked and turned out fine just go back to question two.

...and the last part just puts you in a loop of infinite ignorance...

The best method to get past the mental walls around peaceful parenting is probably not going to be to attack the walls with logic, but to nicely ask to go through the gate. And they likely won't think you're nice if you don't understand where they're coming from.

  13. Don't try logic or reason. Connect and agree with him that a world run by people that grew up without having to negotiate other people's wants (getting whatever they want) would be a terrible place to be indeed. If he doesn't think you understand him, he likely won't care much about what you have to say on the matter.

  14. Very interesting scraper design.

I"m not sure if the gray razor backing piece is connected to the side holders or the the 'big' gray piece but I think you might end up with an issue from the round razor holders on the side.

    1. What's keeping them in place? If they're not connected to the other 'big' gray piece, they'll need a slight ridge on the outer side to keep them in place. If they are connected, the rendered version looks like they might be sticking out too far to squeeze them into the main red piece during assembly.

    2. What are the side razor holders made of? if they're plastic you might want to make them solid instead, for increased durability. If i'm interpreting the design correctly, all the pressure applied during scraping will be transferred from the razor to these side pieces so you'd need them to resist wear as much as possible.

    3. I don't recall seeing a razor blade like that with a hole in the center. Are they an off-the-shelf item?
