Hello friends, Are there any FDRers out in Kelowna, BC? I am moving out there, from Toronto, May 23rd. I would love to meet up some people and connect! Let me know!!

Hey thank you all for your support and interest !! Sorry I have not been able to respond, as much as I am genuinely interested in pursuing electrical engineering, I have found myself in a situation which will not make such a thing so easy... I only recently looked into the courses I need (from high school) in order to go into engineering, and it would require me to take 4 extra courses after I graduate ! Calc, 12 physics, chem 11 and chem 12 i believe. In any case , I am kind of at an obstacle, potentially, I could take those courses, though I have been desperately waiting out completing highschool when I will finally defoo incredible day-to-day abuse (i have defooed many times in the past but unfortunately and traumatically ended up back). While talking about it, I am not sure what high school will help me with, other than being free to pursue a decent job (becoming an electrician, etc. which would require the diploma)... I do run my own permaculture business, but I only charge 13/hr which is ok, but not going to get me into a great place. So my plan is to work and make as much money as possible while finishing high school and then become an electrician. If anyone has any thoughts on these plans, etc. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE share ! Your words are beyond valued and your care and compassion is truly acknowledged and appreciated! Jake

Hello everyone, I am curious on anyone's thoughts on pursuing becoming an engineer, and more specifically an electrical engineer. Does anyone have any knowledge / experience, etc. on the different kinds of engineering, different skill sets for each, and so on. Also, on my last year of high school and is it worth it to pay to go to university / college? Another thought was to become an electrician. I am very interested in engineering though (though I have yet to take the courses in physics, gr 12 math -- I am in a semester school). All thoughts, criticisms, etc. are beyond appreciated ! Thanks

I am going to be honest.. I feel helluva lot better this morning. I had food poisoning on saturday and was still recovering yesterday (and today a bit) and it got me pretty down that when I told people in my family, not a single person seemed to care at all, ask me how I feel, etc. In any case, I really appreciate both your responses and you are totally right. I must connect with myself. At this point what I have been doing is just working out, taking runs, doing yoga, etc... Whatever makes me healthier and feel good so atleast I will be in a better position in the future.. and feel better is the present. In regards to reading some of the books, I actually have 2 of Nathaniel Brandan's books I got through quite a bit and never picked it back up... Maybe it is time. And fractional slacker... You pretty much nailed what I have felt... "thrown to the wolves and no one seems to notice or care." Thanks a lot. And I warmly assure you I feel 10x better this morning. Unfortunately I got high school and must be ready for a bunch of femenists to claim patriarchy, etc... But I am waiting for a project or any oppurtunity to explain how incredibly sexist (towards men & women) that is, and that it is disrespectful to claim such things without any evidence, especially not recognizing we all have our different experiences. I get extremely anxious when I hear a teacher claim we live in a patriarchal society. I have yet to respond. I have though, spoken up to girls my age who claim "all boys are immature, emotionless pigs" and told them thats incredibly sexist... Until another guy said "Well its true"... Anyways, just thought I would share. All the best everyone.

Thanks for all the responses and feedback. I am just editting this post, close to a year later... I was just looking back at my old posts and I came across this. I just thought I would mention I am now almost 18, have been in therapy for a couple years, have gained my independence and life is great..!

If she recommends psychiatry, especially having only met her once, I would say find someone else. Seek connections, exercise and other ways to be healthier, please do not take drugs -- they cause problems. -
Thanks PGP , I appreciate it and if anything keep going because it feels great to express myself like this ...

Hey VillageWisdom ! Exactly... It is poetry : ) . If I can use my lyrics and create a nice song with it... I honestly think it has the potential to go somewhere. I have tons of lyrics like this I have written for the past few months and when I get the time I might try to put em together into a song. I am not very good at the guitar though ! In any case I appreciate it ! Personally I thought what I wrote was pretty good ... Atleast for being written within an hour or two..

Hello everyone! I was writing a few lyrics earlier in school and when I came home I decided to write some more.. This is what came out. Unforunetely it is a rap, as of this point, but I plan to make it into more of a bob seger kind of rock n roll song... Anyone have any thoughts? Here it is .. I'll rearrange your thoughts, you can call me an innovator. Making the world a better place you can call me a hater, Or a creator. Its whichever you prefer. Arguing a guy on Facebook on minimum wage...thoughts?
bitcoin replied to PreDeadMan's topic in General Messages
I worked for free / volunteered in many places until I developed the skills / knowledge to actually get paid for my work. I am 17 and have been working for $13 an hr for almost a year now. And while I was "working for free" / for knowledge and skills, people will always more than happy to take their time to help me learn many other things, provide me with food, etc. Minimum wage is not necessary if a person has the incentive and drive to do well and earn money on their own.. -
It makes more sense as you explain it, though, you did not provide anyone with these details and most people on this thread has basically just talked a lot of shit. In any case you have made many assertions about her and her intentions without concrete evidence. Again, she expressed how she felt about the whole things "arrogant", "hippy dippy", etc or not, these are your take-aways. Of course, it makes more sense with background, but in any case, she explained how she felt about the whole thing. Realistically, she simply refused to follow what you were doing and sharing and that upset you. You cannot blame her for that. I am not sure what you mean by "You wanna talk hypocrisy, Jake? Read the 4th post in this thread." ? Unless.. you are referring to AustinJames; lmfao..? In any case I am not / was not disagreeing or agreeing with anything, I just think it is important to look at all of this before simply determining someone is passive aggressive, etc. and before referring to someone as "hippy dippie" and other condescending names.
-
I agree with ancapzeebo. She is speaking from her heart and expressing herself openly. I don't see how shes attacking you. Shes simply expressing how she feels about expressing gratefulness through social media in this way. I don't see how attacking her and calling her names because of being a "hippie" is any better, in any case, even if you are right. What you are doing seems quite hypocritical to me. I also agree with Carl, I don't see how she could have rejected "the challenge" without seeming to be attacking you. Perhaps there is some aspect of passive aggressiveness but I don't feel she really could have declined without causing upset.

Agriculture, permaculture, debating, physical labor & more
bitcoin replied to bitcoin's topic in Miscellaneous
Thanks a lot for the response, I really appreciate it and am glad to have found someone like you on FDR... I would LOVE to get your thoughts on a few things. I am currently about to drop out of high school to go live my life the way I want to live it, learn and experience, in BC, on a permaculture farm. Of course, there are many layers to this decision, but in any case I would love your thoughts. I totally agree, I would much prefer the physical labour that involves things "out in the wild" such as climbing, running, churning, building, etc. and the piece of mind that comes with it, knowing that this physical labour is towards somthing even positive in the world as well as health. I have heard of Joel Salatin and the first time I did, I thought he was incredibly intelligent. He makes great points, about farming and politics. Very smart man. In any case, thanks for the response and I would love your thoughts on my plans !! Thanks a lot . Jake True that. I started from the city, still here, eating mcdonalds and whatever little food I could eat (crap like hotdogs though) and only somewhat recently, after I finally defooed (long before I heard of Stef / FDR) I eventually found myself in Northern California where I got into the whole agriculture thing. I was fascinated, loved the people, loved the work; and there is unimaginable stuff to learn. Its amazing how people are so quick to think the system is better than before, because we have more machinery and less labor.... Well in fact, Manasobu Fukuoka did almost no labor on his farm once it was all started... There is very little maintenance, the hardest thing is harvesting. Anyways, I heard similar comments in The Truth About Immigration, and others. Doesn't matter though; glad I found like-minded folks on this topic. I agree that the example was a bit different, come to think of it, in TBP, the guy was only doing the moving rocks type work. Though, in my experience, there is a lot to learn on the job, which is far more than simply "moving rocks". I agree, to some degree about the "Tall asian" comment, though there is a lot more intelligence to gain from the work than simply the business / marketing aspect. Creating a plan for the garden / home is one of the most challenging aspects of a good (permaculture) landscaping company, which reduces further labor in the future. Of course, I get that this is not what they were doing. I just want to point out though, organic farmers that I have met, and organic landscapers seem to be quite intelligent, only hire other intelligent people (because they are generally very small businesses), hard workers and those who are passionate(!). In any case, what I am saying is irrelevant, I agree with you. I am just pointing out my experience is very different in working with organic farmers.- 7 replies

In my opinion (which I admit, I might have totally misread, misunderstood, etc --- but from my understanding): Stefan talks "down" upon labor working such as landscaping, farming, etc. (for example in "Testosterone Based Parasites") I have a problem with this because, to me, it is disrespectful and to some degree, ignorant. Please read what I have written before coming to any conclusions about my statement. Thanks. There is an imaginable amount of stuff to learn about truly sustainble and the most productive agriculture. In permaculture, for example, there is extensive research, planning, etc. into the process of building and creating a thriving farm. It is much more than pulling weeds. In fact, it is entirely different, those who practice permaculture are incredibly smart, talented and creative. Those who practice and implement permaculture (Geoff Lawton, Bill Mollison to name a few) have done extensive research, trial and error and are knowledgable in many aspects of science and have chosen to use their physical and mental abilities for the benefit of growing and create thriving ecosystems full of biodiversity, highest amount of minerals & nutrients and actually eventually to provide a very small physical demand. Truly productive agriculture and landscaping begins with extensive research and planning to provide an easy experience in the long run. This takes learning, knowledge of science (soil biology, etc.), philosophy (philosophy created permaculture / permaculture is a philosophy), entrepreneur, marketing and much more. I get that Stefan was pointing that a smart person would necessarily be interested in this, but I am arguing that is not the case. I am arguing that there are many things Stefan is ignorant to, in the realm of permaculture and that there are incredibly smart people working on projects related to agriculture and landscaping around the world. Perhaps I misunderstood and /or did not grasp what Stefan was saying (or the context), but I do feel it is a subjective statement to say that people who have drive in landscaping, farming, and other semi-physical activities as a career are not smart, because otherwise they would not be satisfied. Again, perhaps I have misinterpreted, but I feel it is an unjust statement to make. I would also like to quickly point out, there are folks out there who make over $200 grand with this "technique" of farming; and live quite abundantly in nature. Of course, this involves incredible marketing, and physical labor, to be fair. All in all though, permaculture is a practice of agriculture that learns to work with nature in order to reduce and overturn, erosion, drought, and many other environmental problems we face. For those who don't know either, in this form of agriculture, the soil continuously improves, which is far different than any other form of agriculture (including organic--with till -- agriculture. Just to point out, I am openly "biased", being 17, with a huge passion in permaculture, agriculture, the science behind "it all" , wildlife, wildcrafting, plant & soil biology, etc. I may be blinded by the fact that I have a drive towards living a certain way, learning these things and, though I have / had very little money and live in a grouphome, have put hundreds of dollars towards learning the science behind all of this stuff. Hope this all makes sense and is not taken the wrong way. I just wanted to express and share my thoughts; and use this as a way to share and enlighten folks about permaculture ! I would love to hear responses, because I humbly admit that there are things I dont know, undertaand, could have very well misunderstood and misread and so on. I would love to hear what people have to say in regards to my (possible?) argument. If there are things I have said which are blatanly false, arrogant, etc. please point them out; this will help me grow and learn. My attempt in writing this is to practice debating, learning about debating (and about this topic) and listening to and hearing others' arguments and perspectives. My intention is not to simply say, for example, "permaculture is the best" or anything of that nature, so again, I would appreciate it if people point out if my argument or anything was not clear and so forth. Thanks a lot for reading ! All the best! Jake

Well what I mean is that I acknowledge and know why I got banned and am not trying to fight it... I dont remember exactly what I said, though I am certain that my intention was a big "fuck you" to the people. What I mean by taking ownership is not blaming and being accountable. As far as I know, i simply explained the situation which involved a few other factors. I am not trying to lessen the extent to what I did or anything. I didn't say all FDRers ascribe or I feel they ascribe to those characteristics and I am in full agreement with that, though my experience with a few of them are those things. I was not attempting to speak negatively about FDR, just certain individuals that I came across. My attempt (and it seems like and is possible you dont want me on "your side") was to promote what I feel FDR is. Thought-provoking to get people to question other things, rationalize, have conversations even though they may not "sit well", etc. Though, again, there are topics, like GMOs which seems like a certain side has not observed; and especially from a holistic perspective. For example, healthy plants do not get diseases or "pests" because they can fight off those diseases and pests, and insects can only feed on unhealthy plants. (this is a studied and scientifically proven fact -- they also emit EMFs when they are unhealthy -- and a simple example of this is in the wild). This is why I try to promote organic permaculture, which is a solution to all agriculture problems, promoting biodiversity, happy and healthy plants, no weeds, no pests, etc.

True that. I got banned for opposing GMOs on the chat, these people were saying stuff like "If you dont support GMOs, you support world hunger". Anyways after getting attacked verbally for a while (which I should have left) from 3 or 4 people who didn't have a single argument. I got upset and said "Look, the purpose of this show is to question things; not think you are somehow questioning things by listening to others (Stef) rationalize things like anarchy." and then I called them non-thinkers. As I was leaving the chat later that night, which happend to be the call in when I was leaving, pretty angry still, I said somthing passive agressive to these people as I was leaving (can't remember exactly what) and I got banned. I still think it is incredibly sad that I get banned for this kind of thing (though I take full responsibility for my passive agressive / agressive comment), these people are the ones who were attacking me, calling me names, bullying me (literally) and nothing (as far as I know) happend to them. A huge flaw in FDR is people who call themselves "anarchists", etc. But at the very root, don't truly understanding what that means. In my opinion, anarchy is as much of a philosophy as it is somthing to implement. These people, from the start of our conversation were being very aggressive and mean and i felt I wanted to "fight back", though calmly and respectively; which ended up angering me even more as it just gave them more of a "victim". Hope this makes sense. Jake

One thing which is incorrect which you must take into consideration. The reason why ethanol IS more efficient is the mpg & output you get from the much cleaner alcohol fuel is incredible. Also, right now, most the the (gmo) corn is given as feed for animals... and what is great is that if the corn was fermented and alcohol was taken from it, it would also be alot more easily digestible and healthy for the animals (which is why currently they feed cow poo to chickens as feed) which would be even more sustainable. Either way, hemp fuel and biomass are the best types of fuel / gas creating far more mpg (which is not taken into consideration), it is much cleaner (for the environment and engine when being burnt) and allows there to be a sustainable local source of energy. Also, monoculture, actually does not work. It is the reason you hear farmers talking about crops failing, I have never heard of crops and plants ever getting unhealthy in organic, permaculture. I am sure it happens, but much more rarely. And when people say, corn is destructive to the biosphere, they are not taking into account it is genetic engineered, genetically modified & monoculture. Heritage and native corn planting is not at all destructing to the environment, in fact, organic agriculture ALWAYS improves the soil (assuming the organic materials are returned to the soil) Consider watching "Alcohol can be a gas". Anyways, biomass is 100% ideal.

I am coming from a holistic approach of agriculture, you have not taken a step back and looked at this from a holistic perspective. This is why I said you wasted my time, you have not researched and claim to, and don't know what your talking about. I am not trying to be aggressive or passive aggressive at this point, this is just simply the overwhelming evidence I have. Even this last post on DDT, did you even read the article ? you wrote "DDT does help with fighting malaria". First of all, not only did i never claim anything in regards to DDT & malaria, but this article has not factually proven that DDT helps with fighting malaria. In fact, mosquitos have grown resistant to the insecticide. Again, from a holistic approach, their solution to this was different insecticides, which have simply caused superbugs, immune to the insecticides. This is simply like demanding more govt coercion, for the problem, caused by govt coercion. This not only shows the lack of a holistic approach, but not searching for the root cause. Also, CDC, WHO, etc. all these govt health organizations are not fighting to eradicate malaria; they are fighting to sell chemicals and other false health solutions to world problems. There was also a solution proposed by Dr. Charles A.R. Campbell back in 1925, but was forcibly suppressed by those in power & powerful interests (haven't seen this pattern before have we?). Please do some research and don't be so quick to believe what the government tells you. I won't even get into the fact though, that this was originally about agriculture, which you never responded to, and seemingly brought up malaria as a last resort, searching for any counter-argument and/or support of DDT.
