Working on a fun way to describe thinking about religion
NGardner replied to NGardner's topic in Atheism and Religion
Thanks for the criticism. I was trying on a easy to explain metaphor, but its clear it needs some refinement. -
We have a basic empty drinking glass. Asking the common person if the glass contains liquid they will say "of course not". This is the atheist position. The agnostic would say " we can't be sure if the glass contains liquid or not, it doesn't look like it does, I stick my finger in and it comes out dry but I still don't want to be hasty and say the glass has no liquid, what if it is some special liquid that can't be seen and doesn't feel wet." The religious person would say "not only does the glass contain liquid, it is the best tasting incredibly hydrating liquid that has no end, in fact the liquid created the glass" What do you think?

there is BA and BA with honours i have and most of the jobs I mentioned were people who had the honours degree. Unfortunately I did not research the field and have no one to blame but myself for any annoyance i have with the degree/program. Stef's latest education video on youtube would have been a great tool for me before I went to school.

The extreme vast magority of people are either sick or pre sick. Just waiting for the next thing to fail or some infection to take over.

What if you moved and then the government turned that place into a more socialist operating system? Would you pick up and moved to the next most free area? Living life by the whims of government seems to be like a person who the government has massive control over. Pick the place where you would live if there was no government and then live freely in that area. Avoid and pay minimal taxes once a year and forget about the government. If you find this tribe of people would you follow them around?

The government was just flat out wrong about basic human nutrition. Don't worry I'm sure they are handling war, poverty, climate change, healthcare, immigration, environment and fiscal policy correctly.

Started with this: A fully private system would allow for greater incentive to not only stay healthy but also would lead to cost reductions. When people are going to be personally responsible for long term health conditions brought on by lifestyle choices, which are by far the largest costs to any healthcare system. When people are directly presented with a bill in response to a personal choice they would be more apt to change habits rather than relying on others to cover the costs of their lifestyle choices. Rebuttal: Incentive for better personal health is a concept that works in theory but not in practice. The truth is that human beings are going to experience health problems / addiction / unexpected complications and nothing will ever change that. The current health care system in the US is a perfect example of how privatization does not drive cost down for the simple fact that privatization=monetization. Public health care with a single buyer coupled with a private industry provides a basic human right to health and life, and also drives general cost down, and If you want to talk incentive, higher quality care that comes with higher premiums will cause incentive to achieve better health care with money earned. Not better personal health, hoping you won't end up in the hospital without insurance with a 6 digit hospital bill. Correction: In the current health care system in US the government covers 45% of american healthcare expenses not a valid example of a private system Ok. Let's say 5 years ago. Better example. we would need to go back almost 60 years before medicare and then we are talking about a different time in medicine and then would need to compare to socialist systems of the time Closed with this: I f we take what is hailed as the best healthcare system in the world currently based on WHO rankings, the French system. We take a look at the financials of Frances healthcare system costs which are soaring. France's healthcare has been operating on deficit spending since 1989. Currently they run a 14 billion a year deficit in spending on the healthcare system. You claim that a private system would only push people to get profits and I agree somewhat people will profit as much as possible, competition drives down costs. This is different than current US policies where drug, medical technology and associations of doctors receive special protections and subsidies that allow them to change outrageous prices due to being funded by the government and not having to meet customer demands. The system which is running a huge deficit only has a few outcomes. France can either collect more taxes (less value for healthcare) or reduce healthcare spending (less value for healthcare). The socialist systems of healthcare cannot mathematically continue to exist into the next 100 years. The system that makes evil profits will continue and thereby treat more people, therefore being the most beneficial system. There were other weak arguements about right to healthcare without proving it is a right, profits are evil etc

Universal heathcare vs private healthcare. The guy arguing for universal cites modern america as an example of a private system. LoL no more facebook debates for me

Basically LDL is necessary for eventual plaque formation. Without it arterioles/venules would continue to rip causing more damage. LDL isn't actually bad it is a response to vessel damage, which is largely caused by chonic high blood sugar. You stop the whole cascade of problem by achieving a balanced blood sugar level in the blood. If someone fully plaques over an endothelial tear in a vessel causing narrowing of the vessel that is a response to massive damage. How anyone could take these biological facts and come up with restrict cholesterol, i dont know?

I have a degree in psychology from a canadian university and it is useless. I am currently getting my docrate in another field. Classes are very easy and not applicable to the practice of psychology. If you are going to get your masters it may lead to some decent paying jobs in the field. Truth is a BA is only going to put you ahead of high school applicants for most jobs. You will be qualified to do nothing after finishing the program. I would look for a school that specializes in psychology and has a low acceptance rate. This program in Canada is a filler degree for universities. It has high acceptance to the program for lower GPAs making it a breeding ground for morons. My courses were quite repetitive and destroyed my enthusiam and motivation for the field. I have found this to be fairly common with studying formally a subject you enjoy destroys the enthusiam for that subject when you run up against the wall of academic bullshit. I would say 85% of my class of 200 had no idea what they were going to do after graduating. Most are now working in lackluster jobs (cop, security guard, prison guard, assistant to psychologist, retail, waiter, manager of fast food place, car wash attendent, walmart assistant manager just to name the ones who i remember where they are).

15 months since my last contact with my mother. I don't think about her more than once every two weeks. Its very weird like she is dead. She did try to see me when I was visiting my nephews. I decided not to go and this is what happened. I took out my family's names. (my sister) Hey Nick. Great to see you and meet X the other day Just wanted to let you know that (stepdad) is never allowed back at our house nor am I every going to visit again. He and Mom came to visit yesterday and he yelled at (my son) at the top of his lungs, lost his temper and used profanity in front of my children. Unbelievable! (my son) was so upset and hurt and I am furious! Mom was very embarrassed and horrified he acted liked that and sent me a text saying her and (stepdad) were done. I hope this is the final straw for her and she realizes that (stepdad) has damaged her relationship with you and now because of him there is a strain in my and hers relationship and with the boys. Anyways...take care and have a good holiday then a few days later Hi Nick. I know you are not talking to Mom right now but she wanted me to tell you that she and X are welcome to come to the cottage for Thanksgiving. After the whole (stepdad) and (my son) thing she felt really bad and was thinking if that is the way he treated you and made you feel she feels awful and is very sorry. That incident that day was the last straw and her and (stepdad) are separated now although still living together. They plan to sell the house after a year when they get divorced and then I don't know where Mom and Grandma will be going I feel good knowing I have shed light on an abusive situation and my sisters are now starting to take action following my example to disengage with abusers. Just an update for anyone who is interested

The real problem I believe is the escalation of force in the case. Selling loosies = chokehold doesnt jive well with me. This is a danger of slapping arrests on victimless crimes. Cops are vastly undertrained to use force. My friend took 14 years to acheive his black belt in his martial art. Any time you engage another human in violent action you have a risk of death. It makes no sense to attack a man selling loose cigarettes on the street. Why did they attack him? He was talking to them, he was not getting violent or trying to run. He allegedly broke the law. He had one pack of cigarettes on him. How is this possibly even a priority for 6 police officers? 6 police officers should lose their jobs because clearly they are not stopping real crime.
