Decades ago, when I was young and in college, and just starting my journey into the world of libertarian thought in earnest, I ate most of my meals in the campus cafeteria.
Every night after dinner, I’d walk out the front door smack into a crowd of radical students distributing a communist newspaper. I'm not kidding: hammer and sickle and everything.
When they tried to talk me into taking a copy, I refused and explained I was a free-marketeer, which invariably started a heated argument.
I have to confess that I didn’t always cover myself with glory when defending free market thinking.
You see, I was pretty sure the free market was the best way for society to be arranged. But I didn’t always have the facts, figures, and logical arguments to back it up.
Today, that’s all different.
For instance, at a cocktail party, a leftist and I got into a verbal dust-up when he insisted that socialism was the moral approach to government because it helps the poor, while capitalism helps only the rich.
Instead of trying to frame my argument on the fly, I defended the free market with well-thought-out rationales I have acquired through decades of studying and writing about libertarian thought and capitalism.
“ In a market economy, producers earn and keep profits, which they use to buy equipment and hire workers, enabling them to produce in much greater quantities at lower cost,” I explained to my leftist opponent.
“ People’s real incomes rise, and they become better off, because the economy becomes physically capable of producing in greater and greater abundance at ever lower costs, and the benefit of this greater abundance is lower prices, increasing consumer buying power.”
By the way, this is precisely what happened during the 19th and 20th centuries: People at the end of the last century had to work far less than those at the beginning of the 1900s to earn the necessary purchasing power to buy a wide range of important consumer goods. And this is why the poorest suffer the fewest deprivations in the world’s most market-friendly societies.
With his leftist worldview dismantled in about 120 seconds, my verbal sparring partner left without a comeback and walked off in a huff. That always gives me tremendous satisfaction.

Children have total control of their education and are free to do what they want all day, every day. And parents pay $8200 a year to send their children there.
Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, Massachusetts has been operating this way since 1968. More than 30 schools worldwide have imitated the Sudbury model, and over 200 schools identify similarly as “democratic schools.”
These schools are designed based on the belief that children have an innate curiosity to learn and do best when they direct their own learning.
Why do parents send their children there ?
Sudbury Valley School admits anyone who wants to enroll between the ages of 4 and 18. Many parents send their kids from a young age because they believe that kids do best when they learn what they want to learn.
Other students come to Sudbury because they had various issues in traditional school systems including rebellion, learning difficulties, and emotional problems.
How does it work ?
Sudbury is administered through a democratic process where every student and staff member has an equal vote. In fact, students outnumber staff 20 to 1.
There’s no age segregation; four-year-olds can hang out with teenagers. Many staff members are part time and have rich careers as historians, businessmen, psychologists, artists, among others.
Learning is self-directed and occurs informally through having conversations, starting projects, reading for enjoyment, and playing games. If students are interested in a particular topic, they work with staff and other students to organize courses and find resources. The requirement for getting a high school diploma is to write a thesis about how they are prepared to be an adult. 95% of students graduate.
What happens after graduation ?
You might think that graduates are not so likely to go to college. After all, there are no transcripts, there’s no focus on college preparation, and many students enroll because they had problems in school to begin with. But 90% of graduates end up going to college.
That’s better than the national average of 66% (from the same income bracket). More interestingly, 42% of graduates end up becoming entrepreneurs.

This is the ideal world that the bureaucrats, the plutocrats, and the technocrats desire. It makes their life easy and the path clear. Today is just yesterday and tomorrow - forever. This is the machine that the state wants to manage, a world of down-in-the-dumps and obedient citizens of the society they think they own.
In contrast, hope upsets the prevailing order. It sees things that don't yet exist.
It acts on a promise of a future different from today. It plays with the uncertainty of the future and dares imagine that ideals can become reality. Those who think this way are a threat to every regime.
Why ? Because people who think this way eventually come to act this way. They resist. They rebel. They overthrow.
And yet look around: we see progress everywhere. What does this imply ?
It implies that non-compliance is the human norm. People cannot be forever pressed into a mold of the state's making.
The future will happen and it will be shaped by those who dare to break bad, dare to disagree, and dare to take the risk to overthrow what is in favor of what can be.
I realized all this some years ago, and then when you begin to look around and see how the power elites do not and cannot rule, you discover the whole secret to social order.
It turns out that they are not really in control, not finally. Then it all becomes fun. It is a blast to see the powerful topple from the thrones they want to sit in so badly. It is a thrill to use and hold technologies that no one among the elite ever gave permission to exist.

Karl Hess (May 25, 1923 – April 22, 1994) was an American national-level speechwriter and author.
He was also a political philosopher, editor, welder, motorcycle racer, tax resister, atheist, and libertarian activist. His career included stints on the Republican right and the New Left before embracing free-market anarchism.
Early life
Hess was born Carl Hess III in Washington, D.C. and moved to the Philippines as a child. When his mother discovered his father's marital infidelity, she divorced her wealthy husband and returned (with Karl) to Washington.
She refused alimony or child support and took a job as a telephone operator, raising her son in very modest circumstances. Karl, believing (as his mother did) that public education was a waste of time, rarely attended school; to evade truancy officers, he registered at every elementary school in town and gradually withdrew from each one, making it impossible for the authorities to know exactly where he was supposed to be.
He officially dropped out at 15 and went to work for the Mutual Broadcasting System as a newswriter at the invitation of Walter Compton, a Mutual news commentator who resided in the building where Mrs.
Hess operated the switchboard. Hess continued to work in the news media, and by age 18 was assistant city editor of The Washington Daily News. He was later an editor for Newsweek and The Fisherman. After that, he worked for the Champion Papers and Fibre Company, where his bosses encouraged him to get involved in conservative politics for the company's benefit.
In doing so he met Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater and many other prominent Republicans, thus beginning the GOP epoch of his life.
Hess enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, but was discharged when they discovered he had contracted malaria in the Philippines.
In his book Dear America, Hess wrote that he became an atheist because his temporary job as a coroner's assistant when he was 15 left him convinced that people were simply flesh-and-blood beings with no afterlife. Consequently, he stopped attending church (he had been a devout Roman Catholic).
Years later, while on leave from Champion and working for the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), he resumed attending church because virtually all of his AEI colleagues did so. His return merely reinforced his atheism; on one Sunday morning, while enduring a service as his young son sat on his lap, Hess became disgusted with himself for exposing his child to an institution he himself had rejected. Anarchy, State, and Utopia is a 1974 book by the American political philosopher Robert Nozick. When a state takes on more responsibilities than these, Nozick argues, rights will be violated. The book also contains a vigorous defense of minarchist libertarianism against more extreme views, such as anarcho-capitalism (in which there is no state and individuals must contract with private companies for all social services). Nozick argues that anarcho-capitalism would inevitably transform into a minarchist state, even without violating any of its own non-aggression principles, through the eventual emergence of a single locally dominant private defense and judicial agency that it is in everyone's interests to align with, because other agencies are unable to effectively compete against the advantages of the agency with majority coverage.
Therefore, he felt that, even to the extent that the anarcho-capitalist theory is correct, it results in a single, private, protective agency which is itself a de facto " state ". Thus anarcho-capitalism may only exist for a limited period before a minimalist state emerges.

Atlas Shrugged is a 1957 novel by Ayn Rand. Rand's 4h and last novel, it was also her longest and the one she considered to be her magnum opus in the realm of fiction writing. Atlas Shrugged includes elements of science fiction, mystery and romance and it contains Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction.
The book depicts a dystopian United States, wherein many of society's most prominent and successful industrialists abandon their fortunes and even the nation, in response to aggressive new regulations, whereupon most vital industries collapse.
The title is a reference to Atlas, a Titan described in the novel as " the giant who holds the world on his shoulders ". The significance of this reference appears in a conversation between the characters Francisco d'Anconia and Hank Rearden, in which d'Anconia asks Rearden what advice he would give Atlas upon seeing that " the greater [the titan's] effort, the heavier the world bore down on his shoulders ".
With Rearden unable to answer, d'Anconia gives his own response : " To shrug ".
The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is " the role of man's mind in existence ". The book explores a number of philosophical themes from which Rand would subsequently develop Objectivism.
In doing so, it expresses the advocacy of reason, individualism, capitalism, and the failures of governmental coercion.

In 1957, a 1,168 page book by Ayn Rand, called Atlas Shrugged, was published. According to one source, Rand was alleged to be a mistress to Philippe Rothschild, who instructed her to write the book in order to show that through the raising of oil prices, then destroying the oil fields and shutting down the coal mines, the Illuminati would take over the world. It also related how they would blow up grain mills, derail trains, bankrupt and destroy their own companies, till they had destroyed the economy of the entire world and yet, they would be so wealthy, that it would not substantially affect their vast holdings.
The novel is about a man who stops the motor of the world, of what happens when " the men of the mind, the intellectuals of the world, the originators and innovators in every line of industry go on strike; when the men of creative ability in every profession, in protest against regulation, quit and disappear ".

" TOP 5 PUBLIC SPEAKING TICS that are ANNOYING as HELL " © I spend a lot of time in front of an audience. It’s a major source of my income and if I suck at it, my bank account will feel it. Since I’m rather fond of my bank account, I try to listen to others who do public speaking and pick up do’s and don’ts from them. It’s mostly don’ts, I’m afraid, especially from politicians. Our generation has very few good public speakers, and no genuine orators of consequence as far as I know. The worst things I see are tics that speakers fall into. They annoy the heck out of me, and probably you too. I try to observe and remember those annoyances, so that I can avoid them in my own delivery. Here, then are the top 5 things I notice in public speakers that grate on my nerves. Any of you that need to get in front of a group should try hard to avoid having a single one of these tics even one time in your presentation. 1/ "… YOU KNOW …" This is the one I see the most right now. Politicians seem to particularly susceptible to this one, including Obama. Here are a couple of examples from Senator Mark Warner in an interview published just a couple of days ago. You know, there’s ideas, for example, that I’ve found a tremendous response on that says, you know, we’ve got thousands of schools in our country that are energy inefficient. Why not take folks, particularly young people, 18 to 30 year olds, who’ve been on unemployment for more than 10 or 15 weeks and say, you know, we’re going to continue… Well, you know, the – I wish I’d say that, you know, I’m extraordinarily optimistic, but, you know, the alternative becomes, you know, if we’re going to look at gridlock, candidly, the whole Congress ought to get fired, because the American people ought to expect us to do our job. …there are a whole series of things that we could do that, frankly, you know, we do need folks – particularly in the House – to simply stop saying “no” and kind of roll up their sleeves and, you know, try to work together in a bipartisan way. I doubt Warner even knows he does this, but I find it incredibly annoying when someone speaks like this. You probably do too, so make sure, you know, you’re not doing it. 2/ "… LIKE …" Another well known tic is the gratuitous use of " like ". Example: " This problem is like really hard to solve. You should like give us some extra time to like figure it out." Conversational tics go in cycles, and this one is (hopefully) on the decline. At its height five or so years ago, I used to sit in audiences and calculate the " like index ", which was the number of times the speaker gratuitously stuck in " like " per minute. Younger female speakers were and are by far the worst offenders, and for some reason this tic seems to be worse in California. I heard a young lady speak in front of a group a couple of years ago with a "like index" of about fifteen. Because this one has been around a while, people notice it, and therefore it’s especially important to avoid it. It also has a connotation of youthful cluelessness, which is another very good reason to, like, keep your presentations " like "-free. 3/ "… RIGHT ? ..." This one’s fairly recent. I first noticed it about two years ago. Presenters began the tic of inserting the question-tone " right " at the end of about every other sentence. Even some quite good presenters I know picked this up, and I suspect it’s because it became a conversation tic inside Microsoft – the culture there has a tendency towards such tics. A presentation with the " right ? " tic sounds something like this : " The turboencabulator uses a CPU to encarphalize the singlial signal, right ? And that minimizes energy drain by the gristocentrum, right ? Compare that to an agilomodelizer. It connects garphal entities to anthrocentic viewlicanters, right ? " Unlike " like " or " you know ", I think perhaps one or two " right ? " insertions per hour for emphasis might not be too bad. But as a tic inserted in every paragraph, not only is it irritating, after a while the audience begins to wonder if you’re not trying to convince yourself. Right? 4/ "… FRANKLY …" and its relatives. This one has been a favored tic from politicians for years. They like to insert " frankly " every so often in whatever they are trying to get across. You can get as many examples as you like with simple searches. Here’s one for “ senator frankly ”. I think they are striving for the implication that they’re being honest with us, which of course for a politician is always an open question. I find it insulting, though. Are they not being honest if they don’t keep inserting " frankly " in every other sentence? There are variations on " frankly " and some are far worse. Sometimes politicians realize they have used " frankly " too much, and switch to " candidly ", which is just as bad. An even worse variant is "To be honest with you…". A really bad variation is the insertion of " trust me ", which almost any audience member will interpret as " don’t trust me ". If you believe in what you’re saying, it should come through in your tone and body language. You don’t need to keep reassuring your audience that you’re telling the truth. Unless you’re lying, of course. 5/ Overuse or misuse of " LITERALLY ". I’ve been guilty of this in my writing on occasion, probably because I’m trying to emphasize that I’m really not kidding about something that sounds outrageous. However, I recommend that you never use it in public speaking. First, it has some of the same problem as " frankly ", in that your tone and demeanor should make it unnecessary. Second, there is a bad tendency in present day communication for it to be used naively. Some people apparently don’t understand what the word really means, and they just use it for general emphasis. If you use it, you risk being dumped into the bucket with those folks. There are others: " a going-forward basis ", " incentivize " and other verbicized nouns, switching out perfectly clear terms such as " spending " to something that isn’t really accurate but has a better connotation (" investment "), and other forms of drone-speak. However, it’s the tics that really bother me. I can’t really seen any excuse for them whatsoever in someone who speaks as part of their profession. If you have to get in front of a group more than once or twice a month, these tics will bother your audiences too. So do your best to banish them from anything you say in front of a crowd or on camera. Some people say “ LIKE ” and “ YOU KNOW ” so often that you want to strangle them. Others say “ UM ” and “ I MEAN ” often and enthusiastically. Some people swallow nervously and spasmodically. Some people let their voice swing up in pitch at the end of every sentence as if they were always asking questions. For some, it’s happy feet – wandering around the stage as if they really loved walking and couldn’t wait to get off the platform. I’ve seen a thousand tics over my years as a speech coach, and I’ve had a thousand people come up to me and point out someone else’s tic, usually in whispered tones, along with, “ Can’t you fix them ? ” Here’s the thing about tics. Of course, we’re better off without them, but they’re not really a problem unless an audience notices them, and they get in the way of comprehension. Then we do have a problem, Houston. And it’s time to get out the taser and fix it. A few shocks later, and your tic is gone. Just kidding. There are several relatively painless ways to fix a tic. My favorite is to get someone, a friend, to count the tics over some specified period of time, like a speech, and then charge the offender an agreed-upon sum for each offense. Usually a dollar is enough to get the malefactor’s attention. And you’d be astonished how quickly the tic goes away after you’ve had to pay up a couple of times. Another method is to video the speaker and point out the tics. That’s usually enough for the speaker to want to stop, and wanting to stop is usually enough to allow them to do so. If you’re one of those people who says ‘ like ’ or ‘ you know ’ or ‘ um ’ and you’re aware of it, then self-monitoring may be the simplest way to fix the problem. Notice yourself in a relatively low-stress situation – say, a conversation – and just stop talking when the urge to um comes over you. Don’t stop forever, just long enough to let a little pause in your conversation flow rather than the tic. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can train yourself to do without the likes or you knows or ums. They just go away. So let’s all calm down about tics and start quietly eliminating them on our own.
