  1. Hello FDR--hope y'all had a great Christmas season! I am posting today in order to get some advice as to where to look for employment at a workplace whose culture embraces the values expressed here at FDR and related movements... I have one month left of a coding boot camp (ranked 12'th in the world--not to brag but just for perspective as to the intensity/quality) in San Antonio, TX, and it's around this time that many of us begin thinking about where we'd want to work. I mention my location, but I understand that--especially in the programming world--distance isn't that much of a handicap in terms of reaching/working with employers. We learn HTML, CSS, Bootstrap (I also learned a bit of Foundation), JS, JQuery, AJAX/API, MySQL, and Java (Spring, JSTL, and JSP)--it's a Full Stack program. The goal is familiarity of these languages/frameworks and NOT mastery: Graduates will be qualified for junior-level positions in any of these realms which usually means they won't be writing programs from scratch but rather maintaining existing code (debugging). They tell us at the boot camp that we'll quickly realize whether or not we're "front-end" (looks of websites and some basic functionality) or "back-end" (database communication with the front end) guys, but I, honestly, love both equally. I mention this in order to communicate this point: That I'm more concerned with the values and culture of the company I work for than what technology we'll be working on. I'd love to go out on my own, of course, but I'm besieged by debt (the boot camp ain't free) from all sides, and I'm just trying to minimize risk and get by. I have MANY plans and ideas for going out on my own later, but, for the moment, I would like to enter the working world as an employee. Anyways, I know Gab is rising in light of the Twitter blunderings...I'm just looking for more companies like that which might hire a junior programmer... Thanks again for any help! Justin
  2. My main question is, how do you find ways to figure out what career path to take next? I've been a long time listener and few time poster here and I'm looking for some advice towards my current situation. Recently, I became unemployed and on severance for the next 3 weeks. This job only lasted 2 months and has caused me much stress and frustration. Prior I had a stable job for 4 years that was not that stressful and I liked the people/company. I moved on from this job in pursuit of something better and with a possibility to learn more and grow my career. The position and company was not a good fit, my boss recognized this early on and started to see I was struggling. I was doing intern work as a result and she didn't allow me to take on more work because of this. I became frustrated as I wasn't receiving any guidance and support to learn more and also because the company/position was not what we discussed and thought it was. Overall, now I'm out of work, in a city that I like but away from family. I have a few options to consider and feel like I have to decide soon. First is to stay in the city and look for work. This option is the most difficult as I don't have a network to work with by finding similar jobs and feel depressed from being close to my old job without being able to work there. Second is to move back home, regroup with family and friends then decide where to take my career. Third, I have a possible job lined up across the country that is similar to my old good job. It's 25% less pay and new part of the country, I'm 29 so not that young to pickup and move on a dime. Fortunately I could if really necessary as I'm single with no dependents. Fourth, move down to new state with best friend and live with his family for a while. Cheap rent and close to friends family would be the best part. Being in a small town with no work would not be good. Within the past month, I began taking medications for depression and anxiety. This is not normal for me as I've always been good in life but these past two months really shocked my system and life. I've been talking to family and friends about my situation which has been a blessing as they have helped me through it. They understand what I'm going through but it's difficult with the distance. I think most of my underlying fear that I have revolves around uncertainty. These past two months I haven't been able to relax as often to contemplate these decision.
  3. Title says it all really. I'm a philosopher trying to find sanctuary in a world of zombies. If any of you live in Liverpool (in England) or know of any accommodation or anyone hiring, please message me; I am looking for a flat and income... although the purpose of the income would be just to pay rent! So if anyone wants to give me a room for free, I won't need to find a "real job". I am currently working as a handyman doing odd jobs, this brings in enough money to sustain me but I need to get away from people in my life who are toxic to my happiness and sanity. Please get in touch with me if you can help, send me a message or post a reply.

  5. Here are some thoughts on a common feminist complaint about sexism in the workplace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BxdJeeAaWk&feature=youtu.be&a Sorry if this post belongs in the Feminism/MRM section, I didn't notice it before I posted this.
  6. I am 24 years and have never kept a job for a year. I have had jobs, but for various reasons (school became overwhelming, schedule conflicted with other obligations and others) I have left my past jobs before the one-year marker. I am not making much money at my current job and feel very tempted to start looking elsewhere, but come February, I will have been there for a year. Would you guys recommend sticking it out until then?
