Why Do People Bite Their Nails?

Hi

What do you think? Is it a deep anxiety relief mechanism or just a bad habit?

Or perhaps it is not something that can be diagnosed simply based on the fact that they do it?

(personally I can't seem to stop it, I even bite my finger cuticles, it's pretty gross)

From personal experience: I often start biting my nails when I'm anxious or when I'm stressed AND not honestly acknowledge that and try to avoid the feeling rather than experience it and find out what its about and why it arises in a given situation. After spending a lot of time in persuing self-knowledge I notice though, that I almost completely stopped biting nails, so I'd assume it's not just a "bad habit", but has served psychological/emotional purpose. I don't think one could say though, what kind of anxiety or emotional disturbances this is ocvering up.

Yes this was my worry thanks for the reply. I don't seem to be able to stop so maybe there is some underlying cause that would need to be addressed. Well, I'll find out soon as I am starting therapy :)

It's the fear of being unoccupied, but most therapy won't acknowledge that.

Psychological issues are usually not that simple. In my experience, every attempt to oversimplify such a complex thing as the human psyche will only stop you from gaining actual self-knowledge, since all this basically does is labelling a behaviour with an arbitrary cause, for which there is no actual evidence.
