Raymond Shirley Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Sorry if this has been talked about, but I need some insight on this topic. I was debating against some liberals, and they mentioned this social contract thing when I said I was against welfare because it was basically theft and a distribution of money. They said it was apart of our social contract, and I replied "I never signed this contract you are describing". So I looked it up (a little) and it said that Socrates was the first one to ever talk about it. I never saw anything about an oblilgation for me to just give my money unwillingly to people. I tried to tell them that I was for charity, but not stealing, which welfare is. So, is my logic off? What exactly is this social contract stuff? What are the terms of this said contract?
Andrew79 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 What exactly is this social contract stuff? What are the terms of this said contract? It's a contract that lays out the relationship between you and the government. Essentially, the terms are: You will do whatever the government tells you to. And the government will do whatever it wants to. And that's pretty much it. The left-wing (never, ever do them the honour of calling them "liberals", because they most definitely are not) argument is that simply by living in a particular country you are consenting to this non-existant contract. You can see Stefan taking it to pieces here: And Tom Woods gives it a kicking here: (If you search YouTube there's plenty of others.)
Raymond Shirley Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Thanks, you just confirmed my beliefs. I also agree with what you said about how I used the term "liberal". Old habits, ya know?
