Nathan P Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I want to know people's opinions about something. I follow the non-aggression principle as close as I can. One of the ideas is to leave others to do WHAT EVER they want, as long as they aren't affecting you or your property. This is great, but I'm wondering how I would act if my neighbor was like the old guy of the north (http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Craster) who killed his sons and inbred with his daughters from Game of Thrones (the show). Morally, I'm against it, but is he causing me harm? Is it my responsibility to stop him? He's not hurting me, my family, or property in any way, so what business is it of mine? I'd like to know what you all think you would do if you were living in a world without government, but instead had a bunch of people following the non-aggression principle. Please remember that the same tolerance you show to others, you expect in return for your own property/life. The same goes for Slavery... Maybe I don't know enough about TNAP, so I hope someone will clear this up for me.
TruthahnDerRuin Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 You have no unchosen positive obligations. You do not have a moral obligation to stop him. But I think that it is possible to defend other people without violating the NAP. You can choose to stop him or not stop him. It is up to you to decide.
Wesley Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 who killed his sons and inbred with his daughters from Game of Thrones (the show). Killing someone doesn'y fit NAP. Inbreeding with daughters would not folloe the NAP if they are not old enough to choose. There is debate as to what age that is, but we all agree that a 40 year old father "inbreeding" with a 5 year old is despicable, but a 60 year old man "inbreeding" with his 40 year old daughter isn't evil. It is odd, but they are allowed to make their own decisions. You can defend others, and many do when someone is in danger. If a woman who is 5 years old is being sexually abused by a 40 year old father, it is very much justified to use force to prevent him from doing that. The child in essence is using you as an agent for her self-defense as she is not capable of protecting herself. The same goes for Slavery... Maybe I don't know enough about TNAP, so I hope someone will clear this up for me. Slavery that is forced is wrong. If you can't hold a job and can't take care of yourself, then you might volunteer to do manual labor for only food and shelter as pay (theoretically). Force slavery violates NAP.
