Guest Upthedownescalator Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Hi What works by Friedrich Nietzsche does anybody recommend to get a good understanding of his mindset and key ideas. Thanks
SaintElsewhere Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 This lecture is ok, there are definitely things I would disagree with, and it's probably way too short to do anything other than whet someone's appetite. First of all, make sure your interpretation is by Walter Kaufman. Kaufmann has a portable reader that might be a suitable place to start. There are some excellent essays in the cambridge companion to Nietzsche as well. I'm torn by this question. Some will read Beyond Good and Evil, run away and never look back, but it is probably the best place to start. The Gay Science (The Joyful Wisdom), is a suitable starting place. I would definitely avoid the later works at first. The pre Beyond Good and Evil works Nietzsche essentially rejects later, but could be good if you are at all interested in literary criticism or classical literature.
stevo3890 Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 http://www.amazon.com/Nietzsche-Philosopher-Psychologist-Walter-Kaufmann/dp/0691019835 I strongly recommend reading this book in conjunction with studying Nietzsche, because Nietzsche has the tendency to get carried away by poetical language often at the expense of clarity.
