MTV True Life "I hate the government."

Recommended Posts

I confess. I like MTV. Well only two shows really. One of them being True Life. I like to think of it as a cross between a documentary and VH1s Behind the Music using everyday people as the subjects. The show finds a topic du jour (sexual issues, addiction, economic, socializing, parenting, etc) and then examines said topic by following the stories of 3 individuals. I find it entertaining and educational.

Anywho, the latest show is titled "I hate the government." I dare say all FDRrs can relate to at least one of the people on this show. And then they found FDR. The point is, these three individuals are just like you and me before philosophy. Yet when I watch them, I just think how silly. What a waste. That's not productive! WTH are you doing? You are all chasing your tails! Okay, enough of my editorial/rant.

If anyone watches this show, I would like to hear your thoughts.

Andrew is wildly pro-government, he just doesn't like the current set of laws...

Amelia isn't anti-government either.  She just doesn't like the current set of laws.  My goodness, she says "My goal is building a political lobby....".  She's a special interest.

I don't think the show did Caleb justice...That, or he's just trying to form a junior politics club.  A youthful activist is difficult to classify as "hating government".

I'm calling B.S. on MTV.  None of the people featured in the program hate the government.  A more accurate title would have been "I hate the current cannon of laws" or perhaps "I am very vocal about a political agenda".

The title is at best misleading, I agree. All three individuals seem highly intelligent.

Andrew, due to his rabid faith in the sky god would be least likely to listen to logic and reason about the fallacy of his missioin.

I would place remote odds that Amelia, under the right circumstances (whatever that means) could be persuaded she is wasting her time trying to attain freedom through political non-sense and more specifically her obsession with violence as the means for change.

Caleb, primarily due to youth, seems a most likely candidate for listening to reason, logic and truth about why politics is a losing game. I think if Cabeb, or similar individual gets exposed to philosophy in print, audio, or video, they have perhaps a 50/50 chance of eschewing their unproductive ways and discovering truth.

On a side note about Caleb. The most cringe-worthy scene is when Caleb is at a Tea Party rally and the old man comes up and lays on the biggest patroninzing line of BS about a first Asian-Amercian president. It just makes you want to hide under your desk.
