Dad who died during arrest 'begged for his life'; witness videos seized

The Kern County Sheriff's Office says Silva resisted, a canine was deployed, more law enforcement arrived, batons were used and the man later had trouble breathing. He was taken to KMC, where he died. An autopsy was slated...but no results have been released.

Some witnesses apparently took cellphone video of the incident but deputies moved quickly to seize the phones. The Sheriff's Office, after releasing a statement...and naming its officers...declined all further comment.

People who say they witnessed the incident as well as Silva's family members described a scene in which deputies essentially were beating a helpless man to death. They were indignant that cellphone video had been taken away by deputies.

"My brother spent the last eight minutes of his life pleading, begging for his life," said Christopher Silva, 31, brother of the dead man. He said he's talked to witnesses but did not see the incident himself.

At about midnight, Ruben Ceballos, 19,was awakened by screams and loud banging noises outside his home. He said he ran to the left side of his house to find out who was causing the ruckus.

"When I got outside I saw two officers beating a man with batons and they were hitting his head so every time they would swing, I could hear the blows to his head," Ceballos said.

Silva was on the ground screaming for help, but officers continued to beat him, Ceballos said.

After several minutes, Ceballos said, Silva stopped screaming and was no longer responsive.

"His body was just lying on the street and before the ambulance arrived one of the officers performed CPR on him and another one used a flashlight on his eyes but I'm sure he was already dead," Ceballos said.

I know people from Bakersfield (Kern County). Kern County Sheriffs are notorious for brutality. To them, this was probably just another day "on the job".

In the big picture, these types of action are rooted in the "War on Drugs". Not to excuse them in any way, but Kern county does have a serious gang-banger and meth-lab problem. As the War has escalated, the sheriffs have escalated more.

That's brutal... I really wonder if 1930s germany was like this...

Of ourse not. They spoke German and there were no cell phones then.

Thanks for posting this Allen, I really appreciate your ferreting out these stories. I've posted this one on another site under the title "Father of Four Bludgeoned to Death by Gang of Thugs".

I'm seriously disturbed but not particularly surprised by the vicious killing of a human by what amounts to a Officer of the Law these days.  I am disturbed and very surprised that bystanders would let their phones be confiscated although there was no doubt an implied threat to the bystanders.  In future, bystanders will take their photos and flee the scene before the confiscation can begin.

Fleeing the scene with the evidence might not be a great idea, unless one was able to work without being noticed. What I would suggest to anyone likely to film law enforcement abuse is to stream the video to a remote location. Then destruction of the phone does not destroy the evidence; including the evidence of the person destroying the phone. And for the more serious-minded, there are micro-spycams available that would allow filming an event without drawing attention to the hardware.

Police beat man to death in Sacramento, CA

I bet it was heart disease.

Of course, a perfectly heatlhy person should have survived the savage beating and struggle.  [;)]

According to the official story, the man was acting strange in the first place and then got even stranger when the police arrived.  He appeared to be resisting arrest which is a capital offense in the USA which often leads to summary execution regardless of what crime the person may have been suspected of.
