JohnDJasper
Hiya Has there been a podcast on this before? I hear the claim so often and it sounds so crazy; is there any truth to it? Not half as crazy as the idea that we don't need a state. :o) It's just a matter of getting past your lifelong programming and reviewing the facts. I fully believe that the "animals for food" industry is unhealthy due to the quality of the products and the ill-effects it has on our bodies and unethical due to it's inherent cruelty and its bias to wealthier consumers. Having said that, World Hunger is not about a lack of food; it is the inability to afford food and not just during times of drought/famine. The big players, I believe, are greed and corruption (am I repeating myself?) of which we can only hope to influence by not contributing to or condoning in our own lives. thornyd
Not sure if there's been a podcast dedicated to the topic, but I found some interesting stuff from the Vegetarian Society. "Thirty percent of the earth’s entire land surface – a massive 70% of all agricultural land - is used for rearing farmed animals." "In fact, a third of the world’s land suitable for growing crops is used to produce feed for farmed animals". http://www.vegsoc.org/page.aspx?pid=628 I don't know if that would solve world hunger (I'm pretty sure it's a political problem, not an agricultural one) but it would certainly free up a lot more resources to create a lot more food - and more food means lower prices. Just think about the amount of crops that a cow eats, and then the amount of food you get from a cow. I'd hazard a guess that what a single cow eats could feed many more people than could be fed from just the meat of the cow. As a side note, I became a vegetarian a few months ago after seeing this video: I'm not a fan of PETA, but the video made me cry and I've never felt the same way about animals and meat. Oh, and check out this video of a kid telling his mother that he doesn't want to eat octopus. I thought it was incredibly touching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRNNzMZgrzs
Libertus
Get rid of goverment worldwide and you don't need to 'solve world hunger' - people are perfectly able to feed themselves and each other. Let's at least try this, once
SimonF
It would seem logical that if more grain/land is available because production for the meat market declines then prices would lower so that more poor people are able to afford enough basics to eat r land to subsist on. Alas more of the world is consuming more meat. On the other hand, there are some serious political and economic issues in places where famine is worst that would not be affected by changes in dietary trends in the more developed places.
