tasmlab
I think you may need to edit the line "Finding North with an iPod" in EA - you suggest that it is something impossible. I think an Ipod now between maps and the compass apps can show North quite well. On the second edition may I suggest changing it to "finding North with a ham sandwhich" or "finding North with a dead hamster" (Nitpicking of course, I'm enjoying the book)

ribuck
Wait until noon. Stand the ham sandwich on its edge. North is opposite the shadow of the sandwich. You do need to know which hemisphere you are in (in the northern hemisphere, north is in the direction of the shadow).
fer
If you listen to FDR podcasts on that iPod you are probably finding a better north

What if you are at the equator? and why wait until noon, At any time of the day mark the shadow, wait a few minutes for shadow to change and mark the new shadow, the north/south is the line perpendicular the line that join the two shadows.
