Guest darkskyabove Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Well, it turns out a certain whistleblower was using the same email service as I was: lavabit.com. I'd been using this email since around 2004 (when it was called nerdshack.com ). Yesterday, the site claimed to be down for maintenance, but today it comes to light that, under some kind of pressure, the owner has shut down the service. Slightly interesting read of the message posted at lavabit.com Not hard to figure what kind of pressure. I wasn't hurt as bad as many others. I wasn't paying for the service and I had Thunderbird set up to always copy a copy of any message to my machine, while leaving the original on the server. Mostly just an inconvenience as I had to change my address with the few sites I have accounts with. Instead of being upset, I was a tad impressed with myself for having used an email service that some NSA level geek considered secure enough for him. Of course, I got over myself in about two seconds.
