My friend will be changing his Graphics card from an Nvidia card to an AMD card. Being he has installed Ubuntu with his Nvidia card, And has the drivers for that. I am curious about what he'll need to do after or before he changes it. Is there some generic graphics driver he can use before he puts in the AMD one? Should he just install a generic AMD driver and then specify it after he installs the hard ware?

I can help him with what ever you suggest, I'd just prefer to not have to go into a root terminal in recovery mode over the phone with him to set up a bunch of drivers after he installs the hard ware if possible.

Find all the nvidia-related drivers:

$ dpkg -l | grep nvidia

Then purge them all:

$ sudo apt-get purge all of the nvidia packages above

Then shutdown, perform your hardware swap, and start it up. You'll have the option of loading additional drivers for the AMD card and which packages you install vary. Use jockey rather than specify them directly.
