Robinson Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 I recently came across 2 songs "Letter From the Governement" and "Learn Truth" by hip-hop artist Talib Kweli. I am not sure if Talib accepts voluntarism, or where exactly he stands philosophically, but I was very pleased to hear a rather main-stream artist express such definace toward the State. "Letter From the Governement": http://youtu.be/MWFxWGSnUY4 "Learn Truth": http://youtu.be/o_t2JRnZdGA Lauryn Hill also brings truth to bear on the statism in "The Mistery of Iniquity" I was going to select a favorite sequence, but there are too many to cite. Here is the link: http://youtu.be/7h9IJZX-fmo In my experience, songs that present truth and raise skepticism toward state power are very rare and deserve to be shared. Enjoy In Liberty, Robinson
Wesley Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Here are a couple bits from the songs I liked: "Letter From the Governement" I got a letter from the government the other day I opened, and read it, it says they want suckas The devil want me for his army or whateva Picture me giving a damn, I said never! "Learn Truth" This one I can't really pick a favorite bit. It is a bit depressing and just lets people know what kind of bad things are going on. "The Mistery of Iniquity" The Revolving Door Insanity every floor Skyscraping, paper chasingWhat are we working for? Empty traditions Reaching social positions Teaching ambition to support the family superstition? When the Son of perdition is Commander in Chief The standard is Thief Brethren can we candidly speak? Woe to the menTrusted in the chariots dem' Leaning on horses They run their intellectual sources Counterfeit wisdom creating the illusion of freedom Confusion consumes them I always am interested in songs with a liberty message or some truth behind them. I think it would be good to start a thread listing songs and bits of lyrics. I like having a "liberty playlist" to listen to every once in a while and to support artists- especially lesser known ones- whose lyrics venture this way. Most artists who go this way do not become popular or mainstream, obviously.
GeetarJake Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 There is quite a bit of hip-hop out there that speaks to liberty-minded themes in one way or another(Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, Public Enemy, and Mr Lif all come to mind). Shooter Jennings put out an album called 'Black Ribbons' that has some very interesting and insightful tunes, and I'd highly recommend that you give it a listen. Here's one of my favorites from that album: "Our only weapon’s total defianceLet our love for our neighbors guide usSpeak loud when they try to silenceWithhold when they try to fight us" The album is pretty dark as a whole, but there is a blinding light in there, as well.
