Mellony Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I over heard a mother say this to her son who was being a little on the rowdy side, but nothing that I would consider inappropriate. I felt so bad for the little guy!
Kevin Beal Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 What is wrong with acting like a boy? I'm 25 and I act like a boy sometimes. How is the little guy supposed to take that except to mean that he shouldn't be himself? That there is something wrong with who he is. I think it's entirely inappropriate on the part of the mother.
Mellony Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 I agree....which is why I said I felt bad for the boy....
PatrickC Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Yes, I see this treatment a lot with young boys.. It must be very mystifying for them, when they already know they are boys. Horrible way to shame him about something he can hardly change.
MysterionMuffles Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 He's gonna grow up with identity and sexuality issues...
Mellony Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 I just get so frustrated when society acts like there is something wrong with boys when they don't act like girls.
Kevin Beal Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Oh, I didn't even get the gendered part of that. I just figured she was calling him immature, a boy as compared to a young man or something like that. That's,... disturbing.
Existing Alternatives Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I read somewhere that boys and girls learn best in different settings, for example boys prefer early learning to happen while lying on the floor, while girl sitting at the table. When these boys go to school their learning suddenly switches to the “girly” way. Imagine the confusion, left alone their propensity to succeed. Closer to the original post, I wish that child was old enough to ask, how his mother wanted him to act, like a girl?
