Honest Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Answer by Tyler, The Creator. Probably an unlikely character to see on this thread, perhaps on FDR at all, but I think it shows a side of black culture that is often under-emphasized but makes all the difference in the world. The lyrics aren't exactly classy but they get the point across and are self explanatory. It has to do with self knowledge of course. [Hook 1: Tyler]Because when I callI hope you pick up your phoneI'd like to talk to youI hope you answer [x4]Because when I callI hope you pick up your phoneI'd like to talk to youI hope you answer[Verse 1: Tyler]Hey Dad, it's me, um...Oh, I'm Tyler, I think I be your sonSorry, I called you the wrong name, see, my brain's splittingDad isn't your name, see Faggot's a little more fittingMom was only twenty when you ain't have any fucks to spareYou Nigerian fuck, now I'm stuck with this shitty facial hairAlso stuck with a beautiful home with a case stairsSo you not being near fucking fire-started my damn careerBut fuck it, I got Clancy, he, gave me the chance to seeA world I wasn't supposed to, I'm stoked that I didn't know youBut, sucks you ain't give a fuck and consider a sperm donor nowThe fuck is an Okonma? Still sounds like a powerful, awakening-type song though. I'm breaking in, shaping up, checking out on the prison bus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY Gotye - Someone that I Used to Know This song was played nonstop when it came out. Often I heard it blasting from cars. It reminds me about Real Time Relationships book; how relationships seem to just accidentally happen. The singers seem to wail their experiences into a void, without being listened to and without listening; reenacting childhood—mirroring parent and sibling relationships as the paradigm, in a continuous, vicious cycle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lyu1KKwC74 Talks about the difficulty of being out of control, isolated, depressed, self-medicating, and trying to talk oneself into change. In one of the FDR podcasts, Stef says changing personality is like trying to push an elephant with a toothpick; that it’s one of the most difficult things in life to do but no one can bypass the need for self-knowledge. Guest - Josh - Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Song: Same Old War Album: Oak Island Artist: Our Last Night Lyrics: I've been fighting the same old war, against a disease, without a cure!Been holding on for so long! For so long. For so long!I've been wishing upon a star, as my universe falls apart!I feel so far from the sky, as my dreams, are going by!and They say, it's a battle that can't be won!We need our knives, we need our guns!Should I run away, and change my name?or Should I, stay and fight through the night, and never close my eyes?I'll never close my eyes!I've come too far, to go back now, turn into a face in the crowd!Been on this road, for so long! For so long... For so long!Convinced there is no way out, my world is turned upside down!My sense of direction's been gone, for so long! For so long...and They say, it's a battle that can't be won!We need our knives, we need our guns![Chorus repeats]Stay strong, keep moving, can't let the darkness blind us!Carry on, we'll be the ones to pull the stars down to us!Stay strong, keep moving, can't let the darkness blind us!Carry on, we'll be the ones to pull the stars down to us![Chorus repeats] Meaning: This song could have lots of meanings; it could refer to draft dodging from refusing to participate in endless wars. It could refer to the struggle to spread the message of freedom when everyone around us says it's utopian to live without the state, besides "we need our gov." It could also mean to flee from evil ideas and toxic people, or to resist evil in peaceful ways without violence, but with truth and the light of reason. Then again, I might be missing the original message of the song altogether; and it could just be a cool tune with vague lyrics.

AudreyM Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I've really enjoyed listening to the variety of music here, thanks to all those who've posted! Funkadelic - If You Don't Like The Effects, Don't Produce The Cause Music : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkA7ok5MySk&list=PLFD3B69A3B35E6725 Lyrics : http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/f/funkadelic/if_you_dont_like_the_effects_dont_produce_the_cause_lyrics.html A fun song with some standout philosophical leanings. I'd recommend the rest of the album, "America Eats It's Young", although I wouldn't classify it as libertarian. Crass - Mother Love Music : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SzjEJsIixo Lyrics : http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/crass/mother+love_20264908.html What Crass lacks in melody they make up for in spades with some seriously spectacular lyrics. A ton of their songs are about anarchy, but I think this one ties in really well with self knowledge and defooing in particular. I like punk, but Crass can sometimes be too abrasive for me, so occasionally I will just read their lyrics. Marvin Gaye - Where Are We Going? Music : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFa0NHrF1M4 Lyrics : http://www.metrolyrics.com/where-are-we-going-lyrics-marvin-gaye.html I LOVE THIS SONG! Its got the beautiful voice of the great Marvin, is a wonderful advocacy of critical thinking (or is it, hmm..), and is void of religion to boot, unlike a lot of his other songs. Also, I have always suspected that "Apeman" by The Kinks would make a wonderful theme song for those on the paleo diet, minus the vegetarian bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-5I3gbmvlM
Wesley Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 Masters of War Tatiana Moroz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxxcqXSx2dQ Lyrics: Come you masters of warYou that build all the gunsYou that build the death planesYou that build all the bombsYou that hide behind wallsYou that hide behind desksI just want you to knowI can see through your masks. You that never done nothin'But build to destroyYou play with my worldLike it's your little toyYou put a gun in his handAnd you hide from his eyesAnd you turn and run fartherWhen the fast bullets fly.Like Judas of oldYou lie and deceiveA world war can be wonYou want me to believeBut I see through your eyesAnd I see through your brainLike I see through the waterThat runs down my drain. You fasten all the triggersFor the others to fireThen you set back and watchWhen the death count gets higherYou hide in your mansion'As young people's bloodFlows out of their bodiesAnd is buried in the mud. You've thrown the worst fearThat can ever be hurledFear to bring childrenInto the worldFor threatening my babyUnborn and unnamedYou ain't worth the bloodThat runs in your veins. How much do I knowTo talk out of turnYou might say that I'm youngYou might say I'm unlearnedBut there's one thing I knowThough I'm younger than youThat even Jesus would neverForgive what you do.Let me ask you one questionIs your money that goodWill it buy you forgivenessDo you think that it couldI think you will findWhen your death takes its tollAll the money you madeWill never buy back your soul. And I hope that you dieAnd your death'll come soonI will follow your casketIn the pale afternoonAnd I'll watch while you're loweredDown to your deathbedAnd I'll stand over your grave'Til I'm sure that you're dead. Song Meaning: Was originally sung and performed by Bob Dylan. However, I think I like this one better. Plus, I have been listening to quite a few of her songs this afternoon and think she should have a spot on the thread.
Jer Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 I just read the lyrics to "Young Men Dead" for the first time, powerful song. Fire for the hills pick up your feet and lets go.Head for the hills pick up steel on your way.And when you find a piece of them in your site, fire at will, don't you waste no time.Another thought of the unaware, addiction in disguise. With a drop of blood, you will take them out, for me.Fire from the hills pick up speed and lets go.Fire for real, yeah shoot to kill with no aim.Head for the hills, yes eyes on the camp fire glow.Creep up there like a white mink hiding in snow. And outta black a figure forms a soldier in the sky. With a drop of love, trying to set you free.Run for the hills, pick up your feet and lets go.We did our jobs, pick up speed now lets move. The trees cant grow without the sun in their eyes. And we can't live if we're too afraid to die.Hold on tight, yes hold on tight you're too slow.Fire at the breeze that blows these thoughts through our mind.Hire only thieves to steal the thoughts from our heads. My thoughts: The theme seems to be a clear critique of war and how old men start wars that the young men fight. "With a drop of blood, you will take them out, for me." Killing is good when you're ordered to do it. "With a drop of love we will set you free" "The trees cant grow without the sun in their eyes. And we can't live if we're too afraid to die." Don't fall prey to fearmongering. "They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -Ben Franklin "Fire at the breeze that blows these thoughts through our mind." Resist Propaganda "Hire only thieves to steal the thoughts from our heads" Politicians...
Sauce Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Awww you guys forgot about MEGADETH! Oh, I forgot I'm the only person that likes their music... well anyway here is what I'm bringin to the table.. 1. Dance in the Rain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk7VYA2GtNw Lyrics Snippet: Sentenced to work a dead end 9 to 5Trapped in a dingy corporate cubicle hellThen go to work in the darkness on the midnight shiftAny chance you get, selling gas at the corner ShellThree letters groups listening in on youUnder surveillance courtesy of Big Brother in your carDrones monitor each and every move you makeIt doesn't matter who you know or who you think you areYou'll never see a ray of daylightSo far in debt you're struggling to surviveBut you will break your back fighting and they'll helpBefore you let them break your pride"Powers that be" will never win; a storm is coming, get readyYou better learn to dance in the rain, instead of wait for the sunLearn to dance in the rain, the sun will never come Meaning to me: The song talks about the terrible state of the economy, the huge debt that is upon us, the U.S spying on its citizens. He is also telling "powers that be" that they will never win. Telling that us citizens will retake our liberties in a upcoming revolution were evil will lose and good will win.
JohnH. Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 My favorite song about liberty is Bloody Revolutions by Crass. The lyrics are absolutely brilliant–anti-Marxist, anti-violence, and very much pro-freedom. "So don't think you can fool me with your political tricksPolitical right, political left, you can keep your politicsGovernment is government and all government is forceLeft or right, right or left, it takes the same old courseOppression and restriction, regulation, rule and lawThe seizure of that power is all your revolution's forYou romanticize your heroes, quote from Marx and MaoWell their ideas of freedom are just oppression now." Another great song of theirs is Big A, Little A. According to Wikipedia, the song is "a statement of the band's anti-statist and individualist anarchist philosophy." "Systems just aren't made of bricks they're mostly made of peopleYou may send them into hiding, but they'll be back againIf you don't like the rules they make, refuse to play their gameIf you don't want to be a number, don't give them your nameIf you don't want to be caught out, refuse to hear their questionSilence is a virtue, use it for your own protectionThey'll try to make you play their game, refuse to show your faceIf you don't want to be beaten down, refuse to join their raceBe exactly who you want to be, do what you want to doI am he and she is she but you're they only you." One last Crass song; this time it's Do They Owe Us a Living? When asked about the meaning behind the song, Steve Ignorant replied, "That line actually comes from a poem that a good friend of mine wrote. The poem is actually, 'Do they owe a chicken whose neck they wring for Christmas a living? Of course they do!'" "The living that is owed to me I'm never going to get,They've buggered this old world up, up to their necks in dept. They'd give you a lobotomy for something you ain't done,They'll make you an epitome of everything that's wrong."
Lians Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Bliss N Eso - Addicted Since a foetus, explored life's subtle secrets From my fingertips to my unique double helix I can see history, I can see the past lessons It's your right never be afraid to ask questions How can every religion, claim to be the only one How can they preach love - yet fight each other holding guns I think the golden sun might be able to shed some light I'd rather push peace and knowledge to defend our rights These leaders in suits tell us to fight for one side You think they got their sons and daughters on the frontline? Not down for war but down to get an education We're all equal yet they push synthetic separation But in this matrix I won't be failin to make it This is my cosmos baby space sailin with Sagan I heard it's not where your from it's where your carvin' your view I heard you don't have to wear a suit to argue the truth And so Who are you to tell me how to live my life Cause I won't give this up These are my shoes My view My cue To say I do give a fuck
Chris Harris Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Nice thread and some good songs so far, I would like to add two to the list. Rock the Casbah - The Clash Here are a few lines of the lyrics By order of the prophetWe ban that boogie soundDegenerate the faithfulWith that crazy Casbah soundBut the Bedouin they brought outThe electric camel drumThe local guitar pickerGot his guitar picking thumbAs soon as the shareefHad cleared the squareThey began to wail ... The king called up his jet fightersHe said you better earn your payDrop your bombs between the minaretsDown the Casbah wayAs soon as the shareef wasChauffeured outta thereThe jet pilots tuned toThe cockpit radio blareAs soon as the shareef wasOutta their hairThe jet pilots wailed I like this song because it talks about a fictional time/place where the shareef (king) outlaws music because he thinks it subverts his rule. The second song is a bit different in tone but great none the less. Pet - Perfect Circle Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window Go back to sleep Lay your head down child I won't let the boogeyman come Counting bodies like sheep To the rhythm of the war drums Pay no mind to the rabble Pay no mind to the rabble Head down, go to sleep To the rhythm of the war drums Pay no mind what other voices say They don't care about you, like I do, like I do Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils, See, they don't give a fuck about you, like I do. Just stay with me, safe and ignorant, Go back to sleep Go back to sleep I like this song because it talks about war and how we are sedated to accept and condone this happening, I think the last lines I posted help illustrate that. I hope yall enjoy these songs!
James Dean Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I very much enjoy the Irish style of the song, and the last verse puts a bit of a smile on my face. Awesome song, man. I first heard Frank Turner's song, Glory Hallelujah, and was thinking, "cool! a talented musician who's really outspoken about atheism." And when I found out he was more liberty minded, I shat myself! Atheist, Libertarian, AND a kick ass musician. Frank Turner takes the cake.
TheLolGuy Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Unfortunately I can't provide links on this device but if anyone is interested, the following songs are easily found on YouTube. Faint - Linkin Park "So I let go watching you turn your back like you always do Face away and pretend that I'm not But I'll be here 'cause you're all that I've got I can't feel the way I did before Don't turn your back on me I won't be ignored Time won't heal this damage anymore Don't turn your back on me I won't be ignored" To me this song is imbued with what I would call the rage of the neglected. It was a song I listened to regularly in my teenage years, when I was becoming increasingly conscious of the fact that my fundamental preferences were almost ubiquitously ignored at home and at school. Accompanying that awareness was a growing indignation and outrage which I felt could be identified with this song. Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day "Everyone is so full of shit, Born and raised by hypocrites, Hearts recycled but never saved, From the cradle to the grave, We are the kids of war and peace, From Anaheim to the middle east, We are the stories and disciples Of, the Jesus of suburbia ... And I leave behind, This hurricane of fucking lies, And I walked this line A million and one fucking times, But not this time I don't feel any shame, I won't apologise, When there ain't nowhere you can go, Running away from pain when you've been victimised, Tales from another broken home You're leaving... You're leaving... You're leaving... Ah you're leaving home..." So many witty and pointed lyrics in this song. It is an elegy for the youth, who live in a society of self righteous ignoramuses and imperious hypocrites, and who must somehow raise themselves. The first step to that end being to leave the broken home and to run from the "hurricane of fucking lies." Caught in the Hustle - Immortal Technique "So if I should ever fall and get caught in a hustle, Let them know that I died while I fought in the struggle, From the hoodrats to the rich kids lost in their bubble, Spray painting on the streets and at the subway tunnels, Write it down and remember that we never gave in, The mind of a child is where the revolution begins, So if the solution has never been to look in yourself, How is it that you expect to find it anywhere else?" If you ever doubted that a rapper could be eloquent, emotionally intelligent and nuanced, I offer you this song. A very thoughtful and inspiring piece, concerning the constant put downs, societal deterrents and the weight of history, all conspiring to extinguish individual motivation, but working hard to overcome. Bulls on Parade - Rage Against the Machine "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, Not needs, just feed the war cannibal animal, I walk the corner to the rubble that used to be a library, Line up to the mind cemetery now, What we don't know keeps the contracts alive an movin', They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells, Rally round the family, pocket full of shells, Rally round the family, With a pocket full of shells" As you can see from the lyrics, the song is about the military industrial complex, its vacuuming of resources, the drug war, the hypocrisy of politicians who speak of "family values".

Lians Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Pink Floyd - Mother Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb? Mother, do you think they'll like this song? Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls? Ooh ah, Mother, should I build the wall? Mother, should I run for president? Mother, should I trust the government? Mother, will they put me in the firing line? Ooh ah, Is it just a waste of time Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry. Mamma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true, Mamma's gonna put all of her fears into you, Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing. She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing, Mamma's gonna keep baby cosy and warm. Oooh babe, Oooh babe, Oooh babe, Of course Mamma's gonna help build the wall. Mother, do you think she's good enough, for me? Mother, do you think she's dangerous, to me? Mother, will she tear your little boy apart? Ooh ah, Mother, will she break my heart? Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry. Mamma's going to check out all your girlfriends for you, Mamma won't let anyone dirty get through, Mamma's gonna wait up until you get in. Mamma will always find out where you've been, Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean. Oooh babe, Oooh babe, Oooh babe, You'll always be baby to me.
NotDarkYet Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 A song I wrote: Summer's End (click it to listen) I once saw silver linings, now I only see clouds. Where once I had a thousand friends now got a crowd. I used to say that everything will work out in the end, but to the beaten and heartbroken ones you just can't pretend. Where once I had an open heart, now I close it like a fort. With great stone walls and archers poised and a guard at every door. And if a stranger should come knocking on a cold and lampless night with a cloak and dagger close at hand I'll be safe inside. Here's three cheers for the beaten. Three cheers for the broke. Here's three cheers for the wind-blown ones at the bottom of that rope. Here's three cheers for those who cannot say the glass is half full. Here's three cheers if you can't count sheep and you end up counting wolves. The birds are singin' in the trees but little do they know the very limbs they stand upon will be buried in the snow. And the wavin trees and buzzin bees and flowers pink and red will all turn grey and all fall down when summer ends. All that's good and right I've seen you could balance on a knife. You may call it cynical but I just call it life. And those few with golden souls will be trampled in the ground under the boots of those marchin fools who always run this town. Here's three cheers for the beaten. Three cheers for the broke. Here's three cheers for the wind blown ones at the bottom of that rope. Here's three cheers for those who cannot say the glass is half full. Here's three cheers if you can't count sheep and you end up counting wolves. Is there nobody out there to lift the curse upon this place? for sake of all us rats down here circling a maze If a message in a bottle, then I'd send it off in haste in a rocket at the speed of sound bound for outer space
Canoe_Captain Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Enya - Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) YouTube: Enya - Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) To me this 1988 song is an invitation to sail with your life, your ship to wherever you want to and leave your hometown, your origins behind. Sometimes I see me managing my life as a captain, steering a ship. Like a ship, a life needs a certain amount of time to change course. Like a ship, a life can only get ahead fast when the environment (sea and wind) are advantageous. Like a sailing ship has no accurate time of arrival, I can only set course for a destination. I cannot will my life to suddenly be perfect, to reach the desired port. It might take longer than expected to reach my goal if I have to beat the wind. “We can sail, we can sail… We can sigh, say goodbye Ross and his dependencies... We can reach, we can beach far beyond the Yellow Sea....” On a sidenote: I made a Spotify playlist with FDR themed songs: My FDR Soundtrack

"Riding dirty" refers to violating any given law while driving, most commonly for having something illegal in the car like drugs or weapons. The song talks about how police target the black community, pull them over with no reasonable suspicion other than being black, try to find a law that they have broken so that the cops have an excuse to rough them up and assert their dominance. If they cops don't find any excuse, they get mad. There are scenes in the music video where a hulking man (obviously spends lots of time in the gym preparing for this) is in a wrestling ring, putting the hurt on his opponent and pinning them to the mat. The scene then morphs to the hulking man being the cop and the pinned person being a black man, likely with some marijuana in his pocket. It shows that cops see it as a game of fighting and physical dominance - nothing to do with "protect and serve" - while the blacks just want to be left alone.
Amelius Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Check out Rush; not only are they one of the most talented bands of all time, but some of their songs (like "Freewill") have relevant philosophical lyrical themes. Actually, the song "Freewill" contains quotes from Ayn Rand. Also, I think their drummer identifies as a Libertarian.
Guest - Josh - Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Song: Fate (Acoustic) Album: Age of Ignorance Artist: Our Last Night Lyrics: Am I meant to be something? Is this the song I'm supposed to sing? These questions need answers. Was my life already scripted? If I need to, can I change the words? These questions need answers. Are we alone? Are we in control? Can we chose to play a different role? Can we change the grave,That was dug for us?Or is this the only path to take? Are we meant to fall in love? Are we supposed to find the one? These questions need answers. Are there choices around me,Or am I stuck on a one way road? These questions need answers. [Chorus repeats x2] Or is this the only path to take?
Yeravos Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Birthright, by Celldweller To me, it's an incredibly powerful song, that speaks to a part of inside me that has been imprisoned for my whole life, so that it wouldn't be killed by the abuse I suffered. And now, this part inside me, feels that now is the time to come out. It's enraged at the chains attached to it, sick of the crap that the expectations of the world is. It's time to walk away with no apologies. My favorite lyrics: The voices in my head have all begun to sing (The voices in your head have all begun to sing)And they sure as hell hope I am listening(I sure as hell hope you are listening) It's time to take ahold of what belongs to me It's time to walk away with no apologiesThese voices in the mirror start quietlyAnd now they're screaming back at me(Don't back down)Holding on until my hands and mind are bleeding(Don't back down)This is my birthright(Don't back down)I'm so sick of feeling like I'm helpless(Don't back down)This is over tonightOver tonight, this is over tonightTonight
