Filosophize Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 My g/f is going to her first therapy appointment next week and I want to help her connect to a quality therapist. I am wondering if anyone here has used Kaiser health insurance for therapy and may have any tips on how to find a good therapist. She is going to therapy to process through the very abusive childhood that she had, physical, verbal, emotional abuse from both parents, death of one parent during childhood, self image/weight issues from being obese as a child etc. She is 30 years old and has never been to therapy before. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer!
OtherOtie Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I'm not familiar at all with that insurance, but the way I would go about it is to look at the listings for which therapists are are associated with Kaiser. From there you can probably filter out the ones that seem relevant to her interests in regards to specialization. At that point you might think of calling a few up and getting a brief view of their philosophy if they'll provide it for you via phone.
cherapple Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I would go the other way and find therapists whom I might like (who offer the type of therapy I want), and then ask them before I ask anything else, "Do you take such and such insurance?" Insurance listings usually offer the most generic descriptions of therapists and they are not helpful at all in finding someone who might be good. If you find someone that you like, and they do not take your insurance, you can ask them to become part of your insurance company's network. I've had therapists successfully do that, and they were also willing to provide sessions at a reduced rate while we waited for the insurance to kick in.
