A Disappointing Reddit Conversation

Someone posted on Reddit about Molyneux's upcoming documentary (the Anarcho_Capitalism sub) and a lot of people seem very critical. I'm not familiar with any criticisms against Molyneux so I asked. One person just got angry and started accusing me of logical fallacies before we even got started talking. =/ When I pressured him he gave some minor stuff that I agree with but don't really see as a big deal. He then chewed me out for using logical fallacies again... um... ok... on to the next.

The next person who started out fairly polite gave me some sources to look at. One article from David Gordon which I found to be highly disappointing for him surprised me. The other was something from FDRLiberated... I compare that site to Infowars.com. They cherry pick out particular details and then stretch them to an unbelievable level.. besides anyone who dedicates a site to hatred of a single person has got to have some serious issues.

Anyways, I pointed out where I agree and disagree with this seemingly respectful person and he responds with some really repulsive insults... I mean, I was on the guys side, and I understood where he was coming from. (I may have disagreed with the seriousness of his minor criticisms) but wow... how does that warrant such nastiness?

Do you guys ever get this? I'm new to the forums and just became a subscriber. Reddit is the source of most of the traffic to my website but the comments (and people) there are disgusting. How do you deal with this stuff?

P.S. I'm an RSS addict, is there an RSS feed to new posts on these forums?

There have been anti-molyneux people in the past. I poured over a lot of what they have searching for a reasoned argument and I have yet to find one.

This kind of thing always happens when you push new ideas.

As far as the RSS thing, I think there is an RSS in the bottom left corner. I don't know much about it, so hopefully that helps you. If not, I'm sure someone else will be more useful.

Reddit can be fun but only in moderation.

Some people take their freedom to comment there way too far and get fairly annoying quickly.  For an example of the impassioned, you might want to duck into the anarchism or anarchist threads and just wait for anything anarcho-capitalist to pop up.  Within a few minutes, you will get someone attacking.  It's almost guaranteed.  And not all the cases are rational or well thought out.

So I'm not sure I would expect much different for their opinions of Molyneux, Free Domain Radio or his videos on Youtube.  Some like them, some don't.  That's how it goes.

The ancap sub is the reason I became fully converted into anarcho-capitalism, the "Full Set of Liberty Packages" they link is an extraordinary source. But I become more and more disheartened by what I see there. I think I will eventually just post new articles there and leave it be, kind of like what I do with Planet Infowars. It seems to be impossible to find good conversation on the internet.

You know, one of the criticisms everyone brings up is the moderation of these forums and I'm seeing that as a good thing. Sometimes you need a place to go to just talk and discuss without all the stupidity.

Unfortunately the RSS feeds all seem to be broken. :(

  • 2 weeks later...

I was amazed by all the caveates people had to use before they could say they like this, and what stef is putting forward.

Apparently, you can't* go into /r/anarcho_capitalism and say you like stef's stuff.

*Actually, you totally can.  Most of the folks there wouldn't dare to say it without a 99% in front of whatever it is they like about this.  Like stefbot's some kind of guilty pleasure.
