TheRobin Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Hey guys, I accidentally stumbled upon this really neat math puzzle. Really enjoyed it a lot and I'd say it's certainly the hardest and most fun math puzzle I ever encountered (not that this necessarily means much though ) Anyway, I thought some people here might also enjoy it so there you go. Explanation is in the first 3:30 afterwards the solution(s) are presented, so be sure to stop (though the guy in the video will remind you too, so don't worry about keepng an eye on the timer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoRB7FL02t4 Have fun and let me know how it went p.s. I solved all except for the ones and zeros. Though I regret giving up at that point, I'm sure sooner or later I MIGHT'VE figured out the ones at least
Bulbasaur Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Are square roots allowed? You can draw the symbol without drawing a number, so I think this technically is within the rules (you can't "draw a number"), but the symbol is really shorthand for a power of 1/2, so it seems a bit like cheating when powers of other numbers are disallowed.
TheRobin Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 yeah square roots are allowed. (Can't do cube roots though for instance). Yes, symbols that don't have a number in them are allowed, even if it could be written using a number and mean the same thing mathematically.
Bulbasaur Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 So far I have 8/10 then. Not looking forward to 0 0 0... edit: I thought I had the solution using lots of "i", although I wasn't sure if that counted as a number or a symbol. They should probably specify that you can only use operations. Seeing the answer, theirs is certainly cleaner. I did solve 8s differently though.
Culain Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 I was able to get 2,3,4,5,6,9 Then i watched the solution and saw that no matter long I pondered I would have never gotten the rest because i didn't have enough knowledge of math. So I consider this a victory for myself.
TheRobin Posted November 23, 2013 Author Posted November 23, 2013 cool, ah yeah, the one with using numbers that are letters, indeed they shoudl've clarified this a bit better :)and yeah, I wouldn't have been able to do the 0's either (though I knew of the operation, I just didn't know it worked that way with the zero)
TheRobin Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 Second version of that with four 4's (also this time it's a race rather then a fixed amount, as there seem to be a whole lot of numbers you can create with these), none the less, I had a fun 10 minutes (and got to 18). Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDulLVBtNkk
Bulbasaur Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Interesting... this one could become quite time consuming.
Freeman Stephen Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I got 8 no problem without !!! you know what. 1 really stumped me and i didnt notice 0 until I watched the spoilers. Theres a much simpler way to do 8.
Bulbasaur Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I got stuck on 31 with the 4's game... There must be a better way for odd numbers that I'm overlooking.
TheRobin Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Oh, so you didn't do the 10 minutes thing then? (Or did you get so far in ten minutes? if so, wow, kudos )But idk, the only thing I figured that helped in the low numbers was getting 1 with 4/4 and make odd numbers that way.
Bulbasaur Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I didn't time myself, just tried to go until I got stuck. The only ways I can get an odd number require at least two of the 4's (like 4/4), so that doesn't leave many options to get to 31...
wdiaz03 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I did the 8's different on the first puzzle 8 - SQRT(SQRT(8+8))
