Has anyone done this? Stef says we should apply our philosophy and our ideas out in the real world, I've heard him bounce it off the zeitgeist weirdos and other call-ins and I've recently thought about doing it myself in my own neighborhood. Our property has been burglarized three times, and each time we've made more precautions to prevent further intrusion- of course the authorities could do very little, and in the one case in which we caught the individual who stole our weapons- we got next to nothing in compensation and not all of what was stolen was returned. Since these events, I thought of the neighborhood watch solution that would be used in the event of a WROL situation. A company which lives-in neighborhood which monitors day and night, and in the case of the present times- would dial the police immediately- and could defend properties and lives with force. I am considering putting together a friendly presentation with questions, prices and service plans just to see for myself if the residents of our neighborhood of about 50 or so houses would prefer or would enjoy such a service. Do you have any recommendations for this small study? Has anyone done anything like this? Does anyone have any models already laid out for an in-neighborhood security force?

Hey omegahero09,

I've thought about this myself a few times and wondered what it would take to implement it. I've never heard of anyone else doing it and it sounds like your best bet for figuring it out is just using a search engine to see what other private security forces are used in different areas. I heard something awhile back about a private security force in Detroit popping up after its death-by-socialism. Might be a good place to start?

If you are able to implement it, I would definitely like to hear the results!

My solution for relatively cheap security would be this:

1. Every household gets a gun that is legal in the jurisdiction

2. Every household gets training how to use the gun and safety precautions

2a. This includes things like "dont shoot at a burglar when your neighbor is beyond him" and "avoid shooting unless you are in danger"

3. Everyone gets a safe and lock and training on how to keep the gun away from young kids.

4. People register their phone numbers in some sort of system. This allows you to call the number and leave a message or text. That is then broadcast to all other numbers in the area.

4a. If you are being burglarized, you text the number and within 1 minute, 5 of your neighbors can be at your house with their guns unlike how long it takes the police to get there

4b. There would be drills and protocols for this obviously, as well as maybe some neighborhood alarms that are attached to the number? possibly

5. Everyone in the neighborhood has parties and talks to each other.

5a. Best strategy is that they know what you look like, who is in your family, meet the dog, what your activities are so that they will generally know if something is awry

5b. This will also lead to some asking questions of random people to ask who they are. In a casual sense if they name dropped someone they could get directions or something.

Something like this would be how I would organize things and it wouldn't require massive fees to an external company. There would be upfront costs of the gun and training and safe, small dues that would maintain the telephone line, and you even could add a little bit to the dues to reward the first 4 people who get up and to the house in question in a crisis where the hotline is dialed so that getting up and helping out the neighbors is encouraged.

If there aren't crises for a while and the amount starts to pile up, you could consider subsidizing these protection services for new entrants into the neighborhood.

If I lived in a neighborhood and could put something together, this is how I would organize it.

Wes that's an awesome plan... I think it's actually better than the company idea simply because if implemented right here and now you avoid nearly all of the legal trouble you'd have to go through to make it work. With community watch and defense you don't even need to call the cops, you handle everything in-neighborhood.

Another thing that just popped into my head.

My dad's friend had a carved wooden sign with a pistol painted black and the words "WE DON'T DIAL 911" on it. I think they hung it up somewhere along the driveway.

I think that would get the point across to some would-be robbers.
