Why Get Health Insurance If Pre-Existing Conditions Are Covered?

Hello!

I am looking for some input on whether or not to get health insurance now that under Obamacare, all pre-existing conditions are covered.

As I understand the law currently, all pre-existing conditions are covered meaning that if I get in a car accident, I could apply for health insurance and I MUST get accepted by an insurance company. At that point, I can run up a bill and not pay for it, but also not pay health insurance for any previous months leading up to the car accident.

First of all, is that correct?

Second of all, is the reason that I should get health insurance to protect me in the event that I get in a car wreck, end up in a coma, get rushed to the hospital where an expensive surgery is given to save my life (prior to being accepted for insurance).  Of course, I could not apply for health insurance in between the car wreck and the surgery, as I am in a coma.  I am pretty confident I could not apply for health insurance after the fact and expect whatever poor bastard insurance company that is forced to accept me to retroactively foot the bill that I ran up prior to applying.

Is that correct?

It is worth mentioning that I can afford health insurance as it is, just want to know if the system actually works like this.

Also, I am well aware that no one really knows the answer as we currently have a supreme leader who uses executive power to create or change laws so there really is no concrete way of telling what will happen, but any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
