The claim "I don't care what others think of me" is self-contradictory. If a person could not care what others think of them, they would have no reason to make the claim. The claim is made specifically to influence the way others think about the person.

I think a person might be motivated to say such a thing if they feel they are powerless in some portion of their life. They don't realize that to aspire to not care what others think is actually self-destructive. I think it's a good thing to be able to not allow irrational people to alter you, but this is different from not caring what others think. It wouldn't surprise me if many people who say such a thing are actually trying to communicate that idea and just do not see the difference.

Yes, i think there are definitely people who don't communicate the idea correctly but i came across allot of people who claim to live by that philosophy.

Not caring what others think.

To make friends you have to care what others think, also to influence people.

So i don't think its really healthy to live by that.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Ivan,

I like what you said about "working through the self" in regards to selfishness and selflessness. I think you understand deeply what most people overlook or wont admit in that regard. I ejoyed the video. Thanks!

dsayers,

I never looked at it like that so I appreciate your take on it. When I have heard that statement, "I don't care what anyone thinks" (Florida version), I could never make sense of it. If my friend said that to me I'd definitely question it now. In the past I just dismissed sayings like that.

I haven't heard someone say this in a long time. Is that good?

I just heard a version of this--"I don't care if you like me" and "I'm not doing this work because I want to"

This came from Mark Passio, someone who's trying to build himself an audience and platform to "save the world" !  That summed it all up for me--sorry Mark, but if people don't like you you're not going to do a darn bit of good on this planet!  I'll never listen to him again because of that attitude.

I think when people say that what they really mean is that they feel at odds with or opposed to the ethos of the average person, and of course no one is interested in the opinions of people who you consider yourself opposed to. I think people may also say that  in an effort to express that their actions are born out of a genuine individual desire as opposed their actions being pegged to the desires and opinions of others, in an effort to validate their identity, which reveals that they are probably insecure about their identity being genuine. Makes me think of "excusatio non petita accusatio manifesta" that is, he who excuses himself, accuses himself.

Anyway that's just me rambling, I think you may benefit from scripting your videos or at least making a rough sketch of your talking points, but other than that I have nothing bad to say, I've watched your videos for a little while and I think you've gotten noticeably more comfortable speaking and better at expressing yourself, keep on doing what you are doing, I really like vlogs from FDR users.
