FDR Artists

There was a time where I was very much into art and I still have a side of me that enjoys oil painting and sculpture, though those skills have not been fostered for some time.

In general though, I see a lot of quality rational discussion and even some empathetic conversations about emotions, feelings, and very personal topics.

What I see more sparingly, though I know it exists, is art.

Art as in poems, short stories, woodcraft, sculpture, music, graphic design, photography etc, etc.

I would very much like to foster this in some way. To start, I would like input as to the format that people would like to see.

In this, I would like more people to experiment with their artistic expression and people who generally do not paint or write poems to go try and do one. I also would like to see more quality work that may mean something to me and other people on the boards as it resonates with several people.

I have seen several photographs, or graphic designs or poems, but they are widely scattered throughout the boards.

Thus, I would like to create something like the following:

Each person who wants to enter can pick 1 piece of art that they link or contain in a post. The art must be original and hopefully new so that people have not seen it before.

Each entry also puts a bitcoin wallet that they want funds to be sent to in the post.

Over the course of a month, people browse entries and either vote by upvoting or by tipping bitcoins.

At the end of the period, a prize pool has been collected through a separate address, that I would put a little BTC into and is given to a winner. In the event of a tie, the prize is split among winners.

This is just the idea in my head. Now I am slightly worried that this model may hurt some people's feelings as they may put their heart and soul into something and get no positive votes or tips.

I also think this may bias toward quality submissions from a few people who think they could win. However, I also want some way to encourage people who are not artists to experiment with art.

So, I am looking for a format that others may like or may be able to provide input to refine.

If this post receives no support as far as people responding or upvotes or something, then I likely will assume that other people are not interested or don't want to put some BTC behind the FDR community creating some art, by which case it is not worth pursuing.

So, if you like the idea, post some feedback below and tell me how this idea could be refined. I am very interested to see what can be produced by the community.

By conversation with Welsey, it took some compulsion for me to accept that what I do is an art form. I hold glitch art quite personal to me, an easy to access avenue of expression next to my lifestyle of technicality and mathematics. A hit and miss process, learning what produces the result.

I compile my few produced so far work here, interspersed with some reblogs and other image work.

I'd contribute from both sides but don't have a BTC wallet yet.  I plan on gettin' some BTC soon but others may not, so maybe some more alternatives on the donating side would help.  I think the more important art sharing aspect of the idea is great though Wesley.

I would be happy to offer alternatives, but I can't think of anything as easy as just sending off some bitcoin as the prize.

Not to mention that bitcoin tipping is somewhat of a common occurrence and very easy to do with no fees.

If you have a suggestion of an alternative, I would be happy to hear it.

I would ask the question, is it necessary to make it a competition in order to encourage people to participate?

I, for one, would be willing to participate simply to be able to share and receive input from others.

The idea of creating a common place to share one's art (whatever form it might take), is an excellent one!

It certainly has me considering what online venues there might be to accomodate an assembly of fellow FDR member's artistry all in one place. It seems when things get posted on the boards, the postings can get lost in time and even unwieldy (as in no way to organize the great things that people will potentially share).

Wes, I'd enjoy discussing this with you further and, if you'd like, I'd be glad to do some research along the lines of my idea for any options which would deem a look at.

I know very little about Flickr and I have concerns that if an external site is created, then people may forget about it over time (as either content creators or as consumers). If someone could walk me through how this could be solved with an external site, then I would appreciate it.

Also, I would prefer postings to be user-done. If an external account is used I wouldn't want to create the work for a mod to have to make postings all of the time. Maybe there is a solution for that as well that I would be interested to hear.

Finally, Flickr seems to me to be for photo sharing and I would not want to limit people who may write poems or songs or stories or some other forms of art that could not be put easily into a photo. This one makes me especially wary of Flickr particularly, however another external site that allows more media could be ok.

Giving this art project a bump. Check it out at http://fdrart.deviantart.com/gallery/.

If anyone's interested in joining, it would be great to see your artwork! It can be painting, photography, sculpture; any form your expression of art takes.

Request to join the group on the deviantart site or contact Wesley, Carl Bartelt, sagiquarius, or myself.
