domehouse Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I started reading the achieving freedom book and it was kind of 'all over the place'. For example " The academic approach to libertarianism is founded on the premise that if people know enough about the free market, they will reject statist solutions and pursue free market solutions. The very existence of free-market academics utterly destroys this premise. We can assume that such academics know the most about the free market – and yet they explicitly reject free market solutions to the problem of higher education! If someone who has spent most of their life studying the free market wants no part of it when it comes to their own career, then the argument that increased knowledge leads to a desire for more freedom is proven false." If an academic is a free market academic, then by definition the work at a think tank for profit, not at a government paid school!!!
cab21 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 what is objectivist about your example? the book is talking about people working for government paid schools. objectivism would not have government paid schools the book is not advocating for government paid schools or objectivism the book could name names as to which free market academics work at public schools instead of private schools or think tanks
JamesP Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 The point of the example in the book is that there are plenty of academics who tout free market philosophy who do not also apply it to their own lives. They do not live their stated values. Does that make sense? I find the title of this thread confusing.
William Wyatt Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Freedomain Radio and Stefan are not objectivists, though he is influenced by Rand, and some of the forum members may be. Stefan has stated that he is first and foremost an Empiricist, so his logic is based around that framework. Not the denial of emotion and altruism that is Objectivism, Because at the depths of all logical decisions and motivations is an emotion, a want, a desire. and even deeper is a legacy, wanting to have an impact on the humanity of the future and influence on your peers. There is no Individual without the collective, and no collective without he individual. Similar to light and dark, waves and particles etc.
