if someone invented a mind reading machine, and got information people intended to keep private, is that theft and the initiation of force?

Thoughts are not actions and therefore of no nobody's concern but the person who has them. So I would say, to read somebody's thoughts against their will would be theft, albeit of something completely worthless to others.

It is the same as someone going through your journal or computer files without consent. The contents of the mind are property just as a computer is since they both meet the same criteria as: homesteading, exclusive use, and so on.
