Crallask Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Fisher needs some serious work. I'm honestly not sure what he's getting at besides, "Things could be different." I didn't feel like I took away much from the presentation other than some claims about Incan civilization into which I'd need to look.
verbalVS Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 To me this wasn't a talk about fixing the economic system from the top down. If anything it seems to encourage individual people to evaluate whether their mindset is helping or harming them. The consensus seems to be that we live in a greed-based economy. But if you're convinced by the argument that you are participating in a fear-based economy AND are a dissatisfied wage earner -- you might ask yourself what your fears are and examine whether they are valid. I think this ties back into the concept that, all things being equal, people tend to feel financial misfortunes more viscerally than financial rewards. You might feel your fears are valid because you anticipate pain more strongly than you anticipate the rewards. At least that's what I got out of it.
Mike Fleming Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 So, is this just another case of someone ignoring the huge elephant in the room when it comes to the economy (the government)? Caveat: I haven't watched it. TED doesn't have any quality control when it comes to their speakers in my opinion.
fractional slacker Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 So, is this just another case of someone ignoring the huge elephant in the room when it comes to the economy (the government)? Caveat: I haven't watched it. TED doesn't have any quality control when it comes to their speakers in my opinion. Caveat: I haven't watched either. I have yet to hear of a TED talk that celebrates the idea of property rights and no rulers. If there is one, I would like to have a look.
RandR10 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I think a glaring omission from this guy's talk has to do with personal choice. If you don't mind living in a crappy apartment in a not so nice part of town, ride the bus, cook all your own food and shop for your clothes at Walmart, the average wage will not only meet your needs, it will allow you to pack away quite a bit of savings every month while living healthy. People aren't as poor as they think they are in this country. That said, it is very alarming the trend he pointed out. The doubling of worker productivity coupled with stagnating wages and high price inflation in certain items. I know this is probably preaching to the choir, but that's mainly the product of government spending and inflationary monetary policies at the fed.
Frosty Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Watching now, he does not start strong...answering equations? He switches between confused analogies of his ideas faster than he can use them to actually explain what he means. I know this is a TEDx and not an original TED video but the whole series has been going down hill for a while, we're talking about a group that let Anita Sarkeesian go do a talk. *shudder*
