Alan C. Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 RPD chief collects paycheck and retirement This week, the Reno City Council formally declared a critical shortage of police chief candidates. How did it determine such a shortage exists? Has the city been unable to keep a police chief, suffering from a high rate of turnover? No, not recently. Has the position been vacant for an extensive period of time? No, in fact the position has not gone unfilled for more than three years. Did the city launch an extensive recruitment process, looking for applicants here and out of state? Nope. No recruitment process has been undertaken at all. Instead, the Council declared the shortage so the city can keep Chief Steve Pitts for another year, allowing him to collect a $153,000 a year city pay check and his $180,000 a year retirement benefit from the state's Public Employee Retirement System.
