Everett cop whipped son 14 times with belt, prosecutor says

Officer Jermaine Bellard, 32, of Saugus, pleaded not guilty to one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and held on $1,000 bail.

Prosecutors said Bellard was angry after the boy's principal called to say the child was misbehaving in school. The boy showed his mother a bruise and welts that were on his lower body, prosecutors said.

"He stated his father had him lay down on the bed, face down, and he beat him with a belt, hitting him 14 times," Essex County Assistant District Attorney Mark Byron said.

Doctors who treated the child for his injuries notified police.

"He had deep bruising and horizontal strips across his left lower back and buttocks consistent with injuries in the last 24 hours," Byron said.

. . .

"My client is a very good family man. He's been a very good police officer over the years..." attorney Terry Kennedy said.

Where did he learn to 'misbehave,' I wonder?
