Alan C. Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Federal Gov’t Sues Wisconsin Company, Says English-Language Requirement is 'Discrimination' The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a federal agency tasked with enforcing workplace discrimination laws, is suing a private American business for firing a group of Hispanic and Asian employees over their inability to speak English at work, claiming that the English-language requirement in a U.S. business constitutes “discrimination.”Judicial Watch reported Tuesday that the government is accusing Wisconsin Plastics, Inc. of violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on “national origin.” The government argues this includes the “linguistic characteristics of a national origin group.”
cynicist Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 “When speaking English fluently is not, in fact, required for the safe and effective performance of a job, nor for the successful operation of the employer’s business, requiring employees to be fluent in English usually constitutes employment discrimination on the basis of national origin — and thus violates federal law.” So being able to communicate isn't required? What?
Pleiades Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Why would you need employees to be able to communicate with internal and external clients in the geographically most common tongue?
cab21 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 why were they hired in the first place, if they were fired for not speaking the language the company wanted them to speak?
corpus mentium Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 This is just the EEOC looking out for their comrades over in the Department of Education. If they don't nip this type of discrimination in the bud, companies may eventually start firing publicly educated American workers who are deficient in English. That sort of egg on the face would be intolerable and unpatriotic.
