RF, HAM, and Mesh Networks

I'm working on a project involving radio for data communication and I could use some help. If you or someone you know has knowledge about radio, HAM, or mesh networking technology post or send me a private message.

Overview of the project:

  • Inspired by Project Meshnet / Seattle Meshnet / Hyperboria
  • Goal of setting up a city-wide encrypted wireless network on open spectrum
  • Probably using 2.4 and/or 5 GHz equipment
  • Using CJDNS for safe IPv6 networking which is low-latency and attack resistant
  • Community project
  • Learning project

If you have any thoughts or questions I would be happy to read or answer.

I've got a background in technology (software/hardware/networking) and have been intrigued by the idea of mesh networking ever since James Corbett discussed the concept in one of his podcasts.

My skills are somewhat dated and I probably won't be able to help with your project, but I will follow it here with keen interest.

I live in a very rural area, and there is one business here that sells internet service for a large part of the county. If he were open to discussing how he established his wireless broadband network I'd certainly be willing to relay that info. Unfortunately he is not willing to talk about it at all, and is a quite an unfriendly chap.

I do know one of his former employees that I may be able to contact and get some info, but he has moved north and I haven't seen him in a year. I'll see if the phone # I have for him is still valid and get back with you.

Good luck with your efforts.

Hey Tony,

no, my ISP is DSL. One of my tech school sections was on microwave technology, but it's been way too many decades ago and never had any industry hands on experience with it until the advent of 802.11a came out in the consumer market.

I've made some receivers out of various things like tin cans, old Dish antennas and 802.11x USB dongles, but that's about it.

The 2 antennas you provided a link to are point to point antennas, like for connecting networks of a company located in two different buildings, not omnidirectional antennas for broadcasting an 802.11 signal to a wide area, as in a WISP.

Is there some other configuration would you use the antennas you linked in your post? I guess a laptop of or other 802.11 transceiver might connect to the signal produced by 5Ghz AirFiber, but I'm not aware of any standard that uses 24Ghz. And as I mentioned, those antennas would be highly directional.

I'm a HAM and have occasionally thought about how amateur radio can be used to support the freedom movement. While many believe that amateur radio has been stale for many decades, I believe that it is the, dare I say, duty of ham operators to use their collective knowledge to push technology related to their hobbies towards something that can be used for freedom in the same way that the programmers of bitcoin technology are doing.

At this moment I am just announcing myself and will look into the topic more and come back with any insight I acquire.

Also, now that I think of it, it might make an interesting topic to discuss the role of amateur radio, the ARRL, the FCC, etc in libertarianism.  What I mean is that I don't think anyone has developed any theory (not sure though) as to how amateur radio can be privatized. This would be necessary in order to approach a more voluntarist community and it has already been done (mostly by Walter Block) for the privatizing of roads. I'll start a thread on this as soon as I have enough worked out.

I've been spending the last several weeks digging deep into the BitShares ecosystem and there are many people there with tons of great ideas. One guy posted this link and I immediately thought about this thread here in the forum. Might be worth your time to look into this: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2h7cdt/killer_app_for_bitcoin_incentivized_meshnets/.

It's about incentived meshnets.

Here's another post in the bitcoin forum related to meshnets: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=380441.0,

and another in the BitShares forum which is quite detailed: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=9515.0
