The Shaving Philosopher

Hi y'all,

I wanted to let you know about a youtube channel I started about a month ago. It's basically shaving blog (NOT a blog about shaving, but a blog where I film myself shaving). It's not about philosophy per se, but philosophical topics have heavily dominated the topics I've covered.

My favorite part is that it piggybacks on something I enjoy doing and do consistently with virtually zero overhead.

The channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqhhRSoHKKeyZQw8j40d2Sw and as of this post, I have 16 videos. I figured if I was gonna let you know about it, I'd start with the one (recorded earlier tonight) where I explicitly give the nod to Stefan and his influence on my thought:

Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey man!

All things considered, I'll take "I like this other guy a little bit more" as a high compliment. :D

I'm not married to taping myself shaving. Here's what I AM married to though:

  • Having a concept that'll get me to publish consistently, and often.
  • Ideally, it would be something nobody else is doing.

If I can find a nice setup to tape myself doing other things and talking, why not? But odds are whatever it is, I won't enjoy it as much as shaving. :)

As far as G&L is concerned, I miss it too. Fun facts:

  • I still pay to keep the site up.
  • I've been refering to the site as "de facto dead" to my friends for a while now.

I'd love to publish again but it's so much work I can't really do so consistently as long as I'm at my current job. From the little I've learned, consistency trumps almost everything, so I'll be piggybacking on the shaves for the forseeable future. The lack of a mission statement removes the "it has to be on message" problem.

We'll see what the future holds.

Thanks for the feedback man! It's funny because I was thinking "If only one person responds, it'll probably be Mr. Binary." ;)

Peace out!

Wow, I have never ever seen anyone do so much stuff just for shaving, haha. I usually just take the razor and start without anything at all. Then again, man your chin looks smooooth :) Maybe I should give it a try sometime. Anyway, cool idea and definitely subbed here, looking forward to eharing more of you. Also I really enjoyed the Liberty & Gaming podcasts, very intersting.

lol damn you must be getting that down to baby skin sofntess

I like your idea about the mirror test being an even simpler way of testing UPB and empathy. You can cut down some uhh's because when you do, there seems to be an even awesome flow in your thoughts. Though I do like how the mirror test is a good way to check if someone is projecting or making a valid assertion.

Yeah the wet shave can get pretty damn close. The best part IMO is actually wearing the shave all day. :D I know there are many wet shavers out there, but I'm the only one I know of who customises his lathers with oils (fun fact: I splurged on two more vials this weekend).

I wanted to talk about shaving on G&L. If I ever re-launch the thing I might. I think the reason I enjoy it has to do with what I mentioned when reviewing Reality is Broken. She talked about how part of what makes games fun is making things harder than they need to be. ;)

Yeah it's a nice bridge between UPB and the practical day-to-day world. The concept of "Pass your own damn test first, THEN we'll worry about me" has saved me much mental energy over the years.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey Sydney, if your channel gets more traction in future, I think it makes sense that you can promote shaving products you like.. Great way to get an unwitting audience listening to voluntaryist ideas and philosophy and potentially a revenue stream for yourself too. Who knows.
