Hey everybody,

Today I started journaling as a means to increase my self-knowledge and awareness. However, I'm not entirely sure how I should go about it. Do I just sort of free-form jazz my way through it and just let the words flow? Or should I focus in on one particular topic and think about my thoughts/feelings towards it and write that down as it comes to me?

Thanks in advance for the help!

For me personally kind of a bit of both.

I tend to start by exploring how I am feeling right now and then exsplore how I felt during the day (what stimulated it was it proportional or a trigger, was my reaction helpful, ect) then what ever comes to mind I also try and write about atleast one positive thing too. I tend to use a computer to journal if something new pops into my head before I finish writing about the previous thing I press return a few times make a note of it and continue to exsplore what I was before and come back to what popped into my head afte. You could do the same with writing I guess if you have a separate sheet for notes.

I struggled to know how to journal perhaps I still do a little (I find myself correcting spellings some of the time lol). My therapist said to me when I brought up the subject that it is very personal and there is no set way to do it try things and see what works best for you, read how other people do it but don't feel you have to copy the way they do it exactly.

One thing I do is try and be kind to myself rather than hard on myself when journaling.

Might not exactly answer your question but might be useful is this link https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/42197-i-have-published-my-first-book-dear-self/

All of the above. And then some.

Freewriting rules!

Go for it!
