mlsv2f Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 So I recently shorted a bunch of Greek banking stocks and I'm going to double down and short their whole exchange. No communist debt ridden economy is going to grow in the near term. Is this unethical? I plan on doing so on each index of each country as these dominoes fall.
spd1331 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 It's difficult to say that it is unethical. Those stock were listed for public trading so the companies accepted to have their shares bought and sold as the market participants please. It's a free market after all, shorting is merely another way to profit from others' mistakes. On a side note - what broker are you using to short Greek stocks? Do you know of any online brokerage platforms that allow it? Eg, SaxoBank lets you go long on Greek stocks (and CFDs) but not short. 1
Magenta Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Purchasing government bonds, I could see as ethically questionable, since you're buying a contract to steal money from others, including the unborn. But shorting bonds and going long or short on any stock I don't see as an issue. In the case of shorting Greek anything, I'd think you're doing people a favor by helping the market indicators show the inevitable, and the sooner it happens the better the future.
