Filip Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Hi! I'm currently going through IFS therapy (recently started) and the idea came to me that it would be great to form new friendships with people from the FDR community. As it happens, bringing connection to my former "relationships" of friendship have really just nuked most of them, and I find myself quite alone in my desire to have something truly meaningful and honest going on. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone with this here. So I was thinking, why not strike out for new ones here on the FDR board? It would be really cool to talk to someone who is also going through IFS therapy and doing partner work, but it would also be really great just to talk with someone who shares my values and perhaps faces (or has faced) similar challenges as far dealing with the ghosts of both the past and the present. My ACE is 4. Text is not really my medium (or at least it hasn't been so far) so if anyone would interested in skypeing on this subject, please contact me. Also, did you try doing a similar thing here on the boards, or in the FDR community? How did it go? 5
Kevin Beal Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I talk about my experience of that in a video I published to youtube yesterday. I think it takes courage what you are doing, and I admire that 1
jbass Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I have just had my first IFS session last Thursday, and was thinking about sparking up some conversation about it on here, too! I don't have much to say except that I'm quite excited and maybe even more nervous about the process. Being open and honest with myself has been a real challenge that I'm only beginning to get a grip on. I really hope IFS can be a way for that to get stronger. Have you begun thinking about the parts that you notice in yourself? I've begun focusing on the negative inner interruptions in my mind that make me feel like I'm emotionally out of control, or reacting, and that's given me insight to three of my "parts". Let's definitely get some IFS discussion going! 2
nop Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I've wondered about IFS therapy from time to time, but there aren't any IFS therapists around where I live, so it would be interesting to read what others have to say about it. I think it's an intriguing approach to psychotherapy.

I've begun focusing on the negative inner interruptions in my mind that make me feel like I'm emotionally out of control, or reacting, and that's given me insight to three of my "parts". Let's definitely get some IFS discussion going! Well, dived straight into it I see. I've just had my eight session, and this is the first time we did actual direct parts work. I've kind of had to (and perhaps still have to) warm up to, my inner skeptic is red-flagging me (is this a rational approach? is this empirical? is it made up?)... So what's your experience with that? So far, I've found three parts too, one that kept me away from people or was generally very protective of me in relationships, a "coach" and the aforementioned inner skeptic.
Bedouin Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Well done on the IFS stuff mate. It sounds very rewarding. I might be starting therapy quite soon but can't really partner up at this point as just haven't started seeing any therapist. Stopped seeing an ineffective therapist a while back and resultantly sceptical and hesitant about getting back into therapy. I'm currently reading IFS: Self Therapy by Jay Earley though, have you had a read of that or any of Schwarz's literature on IFS? If so, has it helped you in your therapy?
Filip Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 I'm also reading Jay Earley's book (taking my time). As far as Richard Schwartz goes, I've listened to one interview. Though my therapist is IFS-focused, so far it has mainly been talk therapy. Given that the process has caused major upheaval (and positive change) in my life, I've yet to do parts work. It seems to be very direct and intense, so I hope to get to a safe place first. How is your progress?
TravelerOfBothSpaceandTime Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Hi! I'm glad you're open to sharing your therapy experience with others. My ACE score is also 4. Off-topic comment about ACE: Any number is a bad number, and receiving a 4 isn't necessarily "better" than a higher number. You might have been psychologically abused half to death as a "3", but much worse off than a "7" or an "8" in essential areas of life. Are you doing eye-to-eye therapy, or is this online therapy via webcam? I'm interested in forming new relationships and acquaintances as well, and I, too, have felt very alone in my desire of striving for more self-knowledge, doing therapy, becoming successful in things I want to be successful in, overcoming fear, etc. I would love to have conversations about these things. I'm still on the very bumpy path of improving myself, my situation and creating good and long-lasting relationships, but I can relate to being on the path getting there and I have experience in improving my situation while still being on the road to where I want to go. Thanks for reaching out! I wish you the best!
