Alan C.
Hold it! San Francisco uses paint to fight public urination Public urination has gotten so bad in San Francisco that the city has painted nine walls with a repellant paint that makes pee spray back on the offender. It's the latest effort to address a chronic problem in a city where the public works director calls himself Mr. Clean: Walls are coated with a clear, liquid repellant material that goes on much like paint. Hit with urine, it splashes back on a person's shoes and pants.. . .Public urination has long been a problem in San Francisco, where a light pole corroded by urine recently fell on a car. San Francisco’s summer of urine and drug-addicted homeless How bad is the urine situation in San Francisco? This is not a joke: Monday night, a light pole corroded by urine collapsed and crashed onto a car, narrowly missing the driver. The smell is worse than I have known since I started working for The Chronicle in 1992. It hits your nose on the BART escalator before you reach Market Street. That sour smell can bake for blocks where street people sleep wrapped in dirty blankets. I talked to Mayor Ed Lee and rode around with police to find out what can be done to clean up San Francisco. Why does the city stink so? With the drought there has been less rain to wash away the city’s sins. Thank goodness they banned public urination in 2002. All you have to do is ban something and then the problem disappears. "(A law) demonstrates we live in a civilized society," said Supervisor Tony Hall... Shea Roberts
I never understood why cities with that sort of problem don't just make public bathrooms more available. I know a city like SF would be opposed to a private company doing such a thing (heaven forbid!) but at least this seems like a creative way of combating the problem. Torero
The fine for urinating in public in Holland is a shocking 140 euros (~150 USD). Only for people, cats and dogs can do it for free.
