youzer Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 So, I'm looking for some support for this argument: Bernie Sanders supporters have never earned anything in their life worth protecting. I have a cousin who claims he supports Bernie Sanders even though he's been successful at saving enough money to buy a house. How do I test his support?
youzer Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 Who cares? His "support" (if monetary) is being flushed down the drain. Couldn't it be better spent improving his home or family?I think there in lies the problem. He is not married and has no children. His house is about all he feels he sacrificed for. He fears nothing from Bernie Sanders. What should he fear?
dsayers Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 So, I'm looking for some support for this argument: Bernie Sanders supporters have never earned anything in their life worth protecting. This isn't an argument, it's collectivizing. Governments are predicated on the initiation of the use of force, so focusing on individuals is a waste of time. You will not be able to use logic, reason, or evidence to talk somebody out of a conclusion they didn't arrive at by way of logic, reason, or evidence. Check out Stef's Bomb in the Brain series if you haven't already.

Mister Mister Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I would add, that politicians tend to appeal to unmet emotional needs and insecurities. In the case of Sanders, many of the fears he addresses are legitimate, but his diagnosis of the cause and cure is wrong. So either your cousin has the wrong reasoning and information, in which case giving him better information would prompt him to reject socialism and Sanders. But if he doubles down and escalates, in which case he has an emotional prejudice that BS satisfies, in which case you can't reason him out, you have to understand the emotional needs BS meets for him.

youzer Posted May 27, 2016 Author Posted May 27, 2016 Devil's advocate; argue against the evidence provided here He asks, "Where in the world is it easiest to get rich?" Where could he have been born and become rich the easiest. His professor says that he needed to have been born in a society with free markets, low taxes and minimal government intervention. So, his measurement is based on the number of rich people per capita. His argument seems to be that government paid higher education makes it easier to get rich and lower paying jobs appear to have been eliminated through the use of technology. Beyond that, there's not much else presented. If he controlled for immigration into Denmark versus the United States, his results might not be as easy for him to conclude.
Natalia Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Devil's advocate; argue against the evidence provided here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9UmdY0E8hU I laughed when I watched that. He's comparing very small countries that have very few, racially homogenous people (excluding the immigrants) to a continental and racially diverse country, and claiming that there are more rich people per capita in the former countries entirely because of a government program. I’m from Brazil, and in this century the government adopted a welfare system VERY similar to Scandinavia's. We have welfare for the poor, for the unemplyed, we have socialized retirement pensions, hundreds of free universities (in which brown and black people have ~50% of the acceptances by law), a minimum wage that rises every year, and guess what, we’re still very much a shithole. In fact, we’re in a crisis right now because of that government. When will people realize that what makes a country great or not is not its government, but rather its people? 2
shirgall Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 How about, "After over 100 years of trying, socialism has never worked. Why will it work now?" 1
Susana Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Ask them if Bernie loses, will they move to Venezuela? Its socialism over there and the country is very very oil rich
