Positive thinking?!

To me positive affirmations are a form of anxiety management.  Like just saying "you're a good person" and "everything's gonna be alright" are just meant to calm someone down.  I like affirmations when they're productive and based in fact but as a method of anxiety avoidance they can be pretty hokey.

I think the best type of positive thinking is reality-based thinking because despite the bitterness of honesty, it's all there to help you get closer to happiness.  Basically if your affirmations aren't lies, then they're good.

Why would one need to keep repeating things to himself if he has already determined that they are true or rational? Is not this a sign of insecurity?

I think so.  I think it's a sign of his subconscious either knowing otherwise or knowing a detail that his conscious mind still hasn't discovered.  Since his subconscious pretty much has the whole thing figured out, feelings resonate from it which conflict with the conscious mind's conclusions.  Like you can keep saying a red ball is blue but no matter how many times you say that you know you're lying to yourself.

What are your thoughts on positive thinking and positive affirmations?

Hi Jot,

1. Positive thinking is being solution oriented, openness to possibilities serving improvement.

2. Affirmations are confirmations, usually in a verbal form. Often part of daily, social interactions being used without any reasoning or emotional charge... empty words. (can be +/- or a mix, even neutral)

I abandoned the use of conscious affirmations some years ago due to their rather more harmful side effects, especially on the long-term.

- Have you heard of affirmations being referred to as 'Hallmark cards'?

- What do you think, why propaganda has to be repeated rigorously and if it's any different from affirmations? (especially if it's a 'positive' one)

- Can you be positive while stating how you aren't doing/won't do bad things?

Like everything and anything, it has its application but, I think there is a lot of hipster haircut quacks pushing some nonsense they know very little about. A perfect example would be the self help industry. A lot these idiots online with their fake white smiles and regurgitating religious text they know nothing about. The same goes for the Tai Lopez character with a rented lambo in a garage and airbnb rental property pushed as being his mansion. Tons of snake oil salesmen out there.

I watched Rose KTFO JJ at the last UFC. If you watched the weigh-ins, Rose was saying her mantra/affirmation to herself, and she is now the champ despite being a 10:1 underdog. I think there is some value to positive thinking and affirmations but, all this the Secret jazz and money will just fall out of the sky is absolute nonsense. Like, if you are moving product or you go broke but, you are taking no action to move said product all the while doing nothing but humming a affirmation, it wont end well.

I think the mantras/affirmations can help people tap into areas of their brain they do not use. The same can be said of meditation which is scientifically proven to be beneficial.
