GatoVillano
I was re-listening to the genewars videos and I was wondering if someone can be a r and turn into a K later on in life if the environment forced that person to change. The reason this question is so interesting to me right now is because of the west waking up to the Islamic threat. More and more we see people that were completely in denial of this threat actually waking up and realising that we are in big trouble. The interesting thing is, while I was watching the video, I realised that when I was younger I was a r organism. I was a guitarist in a rock band, didn't worry too much about my future, I was a fucking lefty and I fucked every girl under the sun. Oddly enough, now I am a complete K. I focus on my future, plan ahead, I differ gratification, I not interested in adventures so much anymore, I look for commitment and I mostly look for a woman based on her personality as a mother. I'm a conservative libertarian. I believe in small government and the free market. Maybe during puberty, the sexual hormones that go through the roof might have an influence on the r/K behaviour. When you grow older, you become more rational because your testosterone dropped to a reasonable level. An other fun fact that I've noticed as a conservative is that everyone, and I do mean everybody I know, is a fucking socialist leftist. Pretty much everyone I have know in my province is a socialist leftist. This is why Canada is so fucked. When I met members of the conservative party in Canada, I thought that they were pretty dull, not to creative, clean cut, hard working responsible people. Basically what you would expect from K organisms. But, the fact that I found these people dull and non creative, doesn't that make me a r???? Drew.
Humans can operate in both r/K breeding strategies. Some organisms cannot. Caveat, definitely not an expert on this topic. In humans, r/K involves culture, beliefs, and childhood experiences (including trauma). I think that r/K in human beings is less genetic and more environmental. Nurture over nature, though certain genes do flip on to incite the r/K behavior. There is a thing called epigenetics, which is about how the environment impacts gene expression. If something changes, the breeding strategy can change as well. Also, most teens and young adults go through a rebellious, individuation process where they experiment and do dumb things, trying to find themselves.
smarterthanone
I am both r and K. And I am pretty happy that way, I don't think all r qualities are bad.
Snafui
How do you go from r to K? Eat less... r/K is an epigenetic effect where environmental abundance promotes r and restriction promotes K. If you look to diet restriction on a personal level you will note change. Restriction of all freebies will turn a society toward K. And... children are designed to question their parents--that's why teaching children philosophy at a young age would prevent a lot of heartache as they would learn how to question properly. I was thinking of what I wrote this week and I believe that I've found the answer to that question. The country I live in has a false abundance of resources caused by a terrible socialist government that is building a huge dept to the unborn. In that environment, the r selection is favoured and this promotes a high level of promiscuity. Basically, everyone in my home town fucked like bunnies every occasion they got. It was easy to see that the kids in that environment were sexually active at a very young age. Many of us had a developed artistic side, and for the first part of my life, I spent it on music. So I went to get a BA in music. Later in life I had a lot of hardships and had to work hard to make my way in life and now I'm getting a BA in biochemistry. According to Stefan's presentation ''genes war''. Because of the abundance of resources and an uncertain future the level of cortisol of my mother while I was in the womb must have been high. This led to me having a very high level of testosterone, which pushed me to take risks and to reach puberty probably younger then normal kids. The level of testosterone diminishes with time, and the realities of life hits you in the face. The fact that you have to work hard for what you want to obtain in life promotes the K behaviour. I believe that today I'm half way between r and K. Anyways, thats the conclusion I reached. =)
smarterthanone
I am mostly K however if there was no child support id have a million kids but one family of kids I would pour all my resources into, the rest... well good luck. Best of both strategies. Sometimes I think about going to like Africa or Thailand to accomplish that goal in its entirety. I am still trying to figure out how to fulfill myself in terms of family, so I am sure things will change.
