  3. Yeah. Ok. there are some for whom Saturday night means getting blind drunk and falling over and puking and all that, but it's exxagerated by the press. And if you don't want to experience all that, you don't have to go to the places where it happens. And if they want to stop it, there are almost certainly laws already in existence to deal with it. Drunk and disorderly? Disturbing the peace? etc.

  5. Ah yes. And with input from all the Eastern Europeans here, we might produce a very good vodka. []

  7. I think he'd just shout.
  8. Who knows? We still don't know the full power of the web. Might happen sooner than any of us think. Things are accelerating.
  9. Hi Rob, thanks for the mail. You are customer nubmer 1! Actually the shipping I posted is calculated for US, so I'll double check tomorrow if it's the same for UK.......... ......Miro RESULT! CAN'T WAIT TO PUT IT ON!
  10. Yes to hoodie, yes to mug! Yes, yes, yes!!!
  11. I saw these 2 sentences here http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/feb/24/labour-libel-empower-elite-puttnam and then it struck me that they could apply to anything invovlving politicans: 'My optimism only grew as politicians from all parties rallied to their cause. How stupid I was.'
  12. He (ie Northern Rock Building Society) took a government bailout, so.... has he got any credibility? Suggest him to Stefan anyway: [email protected]
  13. Ummm.... how can I put this? He's dead.
  14. The little I know about George Galloway makes me think he's just an opportunist politician. Peter Hichens, although perhaps leaning towards libertarianism, is a statist and potential politician; he's run for parliament in the past and he's a member of the Church Of England too, so... I don't know, I'll suggest Peter Hichens, he does appear on panel shows and writes too, so he might take up an invitation, were it offered. What about Roger Scruton?
  15. Have you put him forward as a guest suggestion?
  16. Been trying to think of a Brit for an interview suggestion but can only think of people where it would turn out to be a debate, ie socialists! If we could get a Brit guest, then there'd be a solid fdr connection made across the Atlantic - that's my thinking anyway. (As for the debate thing, would love to see Stefan argue with George Monbiot or Melanie Phillips or ....) Let me or Stefan know if you come up with any. Cheers Rob
  17. I taught my nephew to read and as far as I can remember it was a bit of everything: first learning to say new words, then the meaning of new words, learning the alphabet and the sounds of the letters, learning whole words, writing his name, looking at books with one picture and one word per page, then writing other words, etc. And through all of this he would have seen words everywhere: on TV, signs, etc. Surely all of these things would reinforce each other, so how would one separate out each of them in order to be able to tell which is the best bit? (Btw he's a great reader (and writer) now, he got a Kindle before I did!)
  18. Does that mean that you would have supported gay rights if they hadn't already been won? (Which I don't think they have universally, nor do I think anything like that can ever be said to have been 'won'.)
  19. So people shouldn't state their opinions because they might be wrong or criticized? I guess I shouldn't have stated my opinions and skepticism about anarchism on this board back when I first discovered FDR, because now someone can go back and criticize my posts from 7 yrs ago. Now I'm mixed up! Let me get my brain straight. Isn't there a difference between the two things, ie facts and opinions? If we're talking about opinions, then, surely, whatever follows when an opinion is stated is a discussion, which involves criticism, which is what happened. So isn't everything all right?
  20. Thanks. Delighted to have opened somebody's eyes, don't think I've done that before! Damn 'family issues' groups, they're nothing of the sort, just authoritarian nuts.
  21. Not only that, but the video conveniently leaves out the following caveats prefacing statements he changed his mind about 5 years ago: This video, and a lot of memes and other nonsense out there on Facebook and Youtube are just a new, exasperating yet creative way to be a troll. Hmm, I don't know. If something isn't scientific, or, to put it another way, isn't true, why mention it at all, if you're not only prepared for, but inviting criticism?
  22. I can understand your fears, but I'm also heartened by the way things are going, ie most people these days (in the 'West', anyway), don't really care much about a person's sexuality. I think this might be because religious upbringings are fewer so there are fewer people being told outright that being gay is wrong, so they just look at and judge homosexuality neutrally and most conclude: 'So, what.' I live in a very small, rural village in the SW of England and it used to be a Methodist stronghold, but the chapel closed decades ago and people go to car boot sales on Sundays now instead and I know of at least three gay couples who live here and they're accepted as ordinary neighbours like everybody else. There's also the 'pink pound' thing, ie retailers putting a lot of investment into attracting gay people to buy certain things. I don't think any society from now on could do without the pink pound (or pink Kruggerrand / Maple Leaf / etc). Am I right or is this just wishful thinking?
  23. Not sure where to put this really.
