  1. Thank you so much for posting this, Mike! This podcast gave me a lot to think about. I've listened to it three times already and I'm still letting it sink in. Priceless information!
  2. There you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_cult http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandate_of_Heaven http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_Right_of_Kings For a lovely historical analysis:
  3. You don't need any literacy proficiency to be a power broker. In the dawn of humanity club-swinging proficiency was enough to put you in charge of everyone.
  4. Ah, the classic, "X was used to harm me, therefore X is bad," mentality of people who lack self-knowledge.
  5. Mathematical and scientific models are imperfectly derived from reality because we choose to settle for simplified and idealized knowledge to overcome the staggering complexity of the real world. You claim this makes maths and science subjective and I'd like to point out the implications of this proposition. Since all concepts are imperfectly derived from reality, it follows, according to what you said, that all human knowledge is subjective. This makes the term objective meaningless. In other words, you're presupposing the subjectivity of maths and science to argue that they are subjective. If you find this unsettling then I recommend you follow cynicist's advice and study the philosophical roots of ethics--metaphysics and epistemology--before you turn your attention to UPB.
  6. http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=4Qe1yL04JS4C&pg=PA109 Behaviourism fails to account for a number of important phenomena such as relative behaviour reinforcement (difficult or impossible to measure), complex abstract associations (such as market behaviour), and learned helplessness (control over events as a reinforcer). These shortcomings combined with the development of information theory in computer science gave rise to the information processing model of learning. Have a look at this course if you want a more detailed presentation.
  7. Congratulations for breaking the -100 barrier! Does this "accomplishment" represent an elevation or a degradation of your character?
  8. I listened to that show earlier today. After Stef's chat with the working mum and the white knight who came to her defence I realized that I've become used to a quality of callers that is unmatched outside FDR. Did you notice how the white knight came in strong and fierce yet backed away the moment he realized his shit won't fly with a philosopher? It happened in a split second when Stef was about to point out his lack of integrity. Apparently, apologizing for a false accusation is too much to ask for these days.
  9. I don't think they had a huge problem with revenge porn back when women had to choose quality men. Perhaps not being able to dump the bill for your reckless behaviour in the lap of daddy State has something to do with the types of guys you pursue.
  10. Excellent! Nice find, Ruben! How do we chip in? Sneaky donations?
  11. Brilliant! You can feel the message in your spine and the composition is beautiful! I love the subtlety of the shadow-chain relationship!
  12. We'll never know but the shift occurred with the change in perception, which is all that really matters.
  13. All the code I release is licensed under BSD because it's as close as it gets to no strings attached, free to use software. I prefer to rely on reciprocity instead of legal binding.
  14. Simon The Boxer is an example Stef uses in Real-Time Relationships to illustrate the principles behind recurring dysfunctional behaviour. I have, in fact, explained the basic theory in my post but I think it's a good idea to read the original starting on page 80 of the free PDF.
  15. I'm really sorry to hear that, Ivan. Prolonged exposure to pain at a formative age truly mutates the child's desire to master his environment. He now derives his sense of accomplishment by managing his pain responses and that becomes his template for adult behaviour. It's a textbook Simon The Boxer scenario.
  16. You tell children that the pain you're causing them is an expression of your love.
  17. Thanks for taking the time to help organize the meetup Ruben and marius! I'm willing to pay for a private venue but I'm also fine with a casual meetup in a park as Robin suggested. Anything up to 40 euros seems reasonable. You guys know the city better than I do so I'll leave the decision to you.
  18. Attack feminism or provide arguments against it?
  19. He did you a favour because Gramatik is awesome! Street Bangerz is still one of my favourite albums.
  20. Parov Stelar - The Princess (album)
  21. You're in luck because there's no such thing as forced gratitude. Rape isn't forced lovemaking, and involuntary gratitude is nothing more than obedience under threat. Your father didn't want your gratitude, he wanted you to obey him. Does your boyfriend know about your history with your father? If so, he'd be wise to avoid repeating your father's patterns of behaviour.
  22. I don't know how anyone can watch this commercial without getting an upset stomach... I felt my heart rate go up the moment I saw the woman's facial expression. People seriously consider this funny? What's next? Chopping off a man's penis and throwing it in the waste disposal? Oh, right, they already made fun of that on TV. I found your spy log quite interesting to read. I used to spend a lot of time around Scandinavians boys and young adults when I was a part of the gaming world. What baffled me was the rampant alcoholism that seemed perfectly normal to them. Not only that, their parents appeared to be supportive of these weekend, drink-till-you-pass-out "adventures." My sample size is rather small so I'd like to ask you if you've observed a similar trend amongst the Scandinavian youth.
  23. The most powerful critique of Socialism. It's quite thick but it demolishes every "theory" put forward by Marx.
