  1. http://www.businessinsider.com/cognitive-biases-that-affect-decisions-2015-8 It's a chart so it's hard to quote here. Worth giving a look.
  2. http://www.rt.com/usa/americans-revolution-armed-percent-738/ Take Russia Today with a grain of salt, but:

  4. https://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2015/09/14/science-integrity-is-the-lowest-in-500-years/ Basically a criticism of an article about the California Drought limiting its view to the previous 500 years, because there were worse droughts if you go back further...
  5. It is probably more accurate to say that cancer is an epigenetic disease.
  6. I got the combibars in silver, but I haven't tried the gold one.
  7. Indeed. There's help here: http://thefisch.com/?content=home
  8. More Pluto (and Charon) pix: http://www.wired.com/2015/09/first-pluto-photos-new-horizons-massive-data-dump/
  9. If she hadn't appealed, she would have saved a lot of money as Kleiner Perkins said they'd waive repayment of legal fees if she stopped. Not stellar decision-making there.
  10. There is a premium for numismatic (collectible) coins, and there is a premium for physical shipping, typically. You might be better off finding a local supplier, sometimes a pawn shop, sometimes a coin dealer, that has stock, run-of-the-mill gold American Eagles, as these would have the lowest premium. There are other more recognizable (and therefore harder to fake or inflate) coins. For example, there was a time when Krugerrands were the most popular. The American Gold Buffalo is good too. (Eagles are 22-karat gold, Buffalos are 24-karat, but they have the same amount of gold content) Little known fact: (in 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz varieties) the Krugerrand, the American Eagle, the Britannia, and the Isle of Man Angels are the same dimensions. The British have another coin called the Sovereign, and it's the same size as a South African "2 Rand".

  13. No pistol is going to be more accurate than a rifle in personal combat. Faster to move onto a target, maybe, but not more accurate. All typically carried handgun rounds are less than 20% of the amount of energy expended on targets as rifle rounds as well. You'd be amazed how different it is when you are downrange of someone shooting at you. It's a great deal more to talk about that I'm willing to put here, but high stress plays merry hell with fine motor control.
  14. I'm no apologist for the state, but I have been a firearms instructor. Please remember that statistically only 7% of handgun hits are fatal. You cannot count on a handgun stopping any threat with a single shot, no matter what gun or what caliber. Police are taught, quite rightly, to continue to shoot a lethal threat until the threat is gone. Add to this that under stress, even trained shooters will miss an attacker 3/4 of the time in the 10-21 foot zone and will miss an attacker 1/2 of the time if they are in closer. I'm not excusing it. I'm explaining it.
  15. Femininity is just as good as masculinity, only well-behaved, neatly coiffed, and demure (Y-chromosomes suppress these qualities, but do allow the advantage of not dirtying dishes by eating over the sink).
  16. Let me underscore that their theory is that early and effective feedback (and in general all communications) is the key to good management. A lot of their stuff is about cutting through BS to what actually works, which appeals a great deal to the empiricist in me.
  17. A local government is any government other than the Federal one, or the one's governing entire states. Most states have counties which have local governments, and some counties are even broken up into townships or other sections that have local governments. Towns and cities of a size to become incorporated also have local governments.
  18. Actually, yes. I recommend the following site for a good discussion on effective management, with a firehose of material to learn: http://www.manager-tools.com/
  19. Well, I was alive in 1978, 10 years old, but I have some perspective. I remember the Camp David Accords with Carter, Begin, and Sadat. I remember gas lines averted by getting a diesel Rabbit. And I certainly remember this little gem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970s_energy_crisis And then there's this little measure to push for full employment, but I don't remember it or its effects: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humphrey%E2%80%93Hawkins_Full_Employment_Act
  20. As I did in a previous thread on this book, I also recommend the audiobook version for those that want an alternative method for experiencing this material. There are unabridged versions out there, even. Although I'm glad they tried to make them, the movies cut out a great deal, and they add other things that might distract.
  21. Let me try: an actor who is the primary or proximate cause of a consequence where the actor has a duty to correct the harm of that consequence.
  22. Things only go well on that front when both Mexico and the US pick the same Cartel (Sinaloa appears to have won) to support.
