  1. One way is that they release the data of basic research for others to view after a time. I can only hope they do something similar with all nuclear research, but a lot of data from earlier quantum research is available for anyone to sift through. Even the LHC provides data if you can handle it. http://home.web.cern.ch/about/computing Obligatorycredibility: I used to coordinate responses to customer problems with systems used for data dumps like this.
  2. And that evidence is judged by a group of unbiased reasonable and prudent people that determines whether the witness observed what he or she said she observed. (By the way, you undermined your own quantum woo by going to the witness argument. Now you have to stick to observable phenomena that abide by the rules of space/time). And all sides of the matter get to bring expert witnesses to critically examine the observation that was testified. And, the witness faces severe penalties if they were lying, unless they are lying about sex and they are a sitting president. Good luck finding unbiased juries to examine paranormal claims.
  3. Ladies should be giving white feathers to men who look moisturized.
  4. Yes, I think it's easier for people who want to see something to see something, and it's polarized by the fact that people who want to see something else have more choices based on what they set to record. Viewership (ahem) of the The View is considerably less in both percentages and total numbers than the liberal echo chamber daytime shows of my youth (Phil Donahue and Oprah).
  5. Kids at any early age playfighting learn the "not the face" and "not the dangly bits" forbidden targets... but I'm a child of the 60s and things might be different now.
  6. Frankly, I think that downvote/upvote should go away, and that instead people should be able to tag posts... and the number of times people pick a tag for a thread or a post should be displayed, and be clickable and searchable. Any thread that someone posts too should get a tag for that poster. Tag clouds could show the most popular tags in a forum category, etc. etc. I see this as quite a bit more useful.
  7. With time-shifting and youtube clips being so prevalent this is less of a factor than it used to be.
  8. My first job, other than contract programming, was as a dishwasher in a sit down restaurant. You can learn something in such a job... especially in spotting people that will do the job for 2 weeks and move on and the people that will do it for a few months and be ready for something bigger. I don't think being snarky at the people that are clearly wasting time and money is such a bad thing. You can be both snarky and successful sometimes.
  9. My tongue was pretty firmly in cheek.
  10. The "strawman" logo will get used less and less if everyone says what they mean in more clear and concise terms, sticks to quotes and behaviors, and avoids statements on surmised intent.
  11. Management notices the people that get things done. That being said, management of minimum wage workers does not closely approximate the ideal, so it doesn't hurt to communicate without complaining, and offer solutions whenever pointing out problems. Unpopularity of good workers diminishes as one rises in the workforce, as the others' jealousy and fear diminishes. There's always politics. You always have to work with people. However, you probably have a jump start on empathy and cooperation on most people just by thinking it through and posting your story. In the long run, don't be fine with things being that way. Insist on something good from yourself and the people you interact with, including jobs and coworkers.
  12. As the risk of drawing a flame war, the real question is what distinguishes the behavior from borderline personality disorder. Is it that this particular requirement that a boundary be crossed is forced to be socially acceptable? If you insist on being referred to as JPasaurus (Rex), and that you be allowed to ravage raw warm-blooded food in a restaurant is not yet socially acceptable, by law, but if enough trannosaurs gather enough lobbying resources I'm sure we'll need a mammalian buffet added to the local cafeteria. Most of us deal with our eating quirks in quiet desperate silence.
  13. The ReCAPTCHA and Amazon Turk gambits were to improve machine learning and interpretation of less-than-optimal images of letters and numbers, not verification of addresses.
  14. Gary Taubes http://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Get-Fat-About-ebook/dp/B003WUYOQ6/ That being said, if you pick something, pick something you can stick with for a long time without getting discouraged or bored.
  15. I have not downvoted you, but generally when I downvote, it's for someone who has not read the posting they've responded to or--more frequently--someone that makes me compelled to say something to them I've said before. I completely understand that communication is a process that requires validation and acknowledgment by the recipient to be considered successful, but there are some arguments that are more dogmatic reiterations than honest exploration. Those are the kinds of conversations where downvotes get handed out like candy. Amen! Fist bump!
  16. Adam Curry touched on this in a recent No Agenda podcast. He insisted that his co-host (John C. Dvorak) refer to him as "she" from that point onward, with no other changes apparent. John replied that he doesn't usually refer to him, but if he does in the future he'll be sure to call him "it".
  17. The gasses that are ionized and turned into plasma do not have to be produced by the atom bomb, they are nearby when it explodes. When a grenade explodes, it's not the explosive but the metal shell around it that becomes shrapnel.
  18. Well, it's situationally dependent. I'm married. I shouldn't try to have sex with every virtuous woman I encounter in order to reproduce. Joel has three virtuous female friends, relationship status unknown, so it may be a bad idea to reproduce with them for unknown reasons. It does not always follow that we should always impregnate at least one virtuous female friend. I think Stefan's ultimate message is to identify virtuous female friends, develop and nurture a deep, connected relationship with them, commit to one, and reproduce with that one, once you fully know one another and agree to this course of action. This is a process that takes time and effort.
  19. Mike, this is an important insight, that it is critical to only verbalize moral judgements of behaviors and not of intentions. I appreciate your explanation.
  20. Managers are agents of the company and they should be looking out for any activity that diminishes the company's value. Yes, you should not treat them as your confidant on all personal matters, but also you should be able to point out things that hurt the company and they should try to fix them. It is ideal to trust that your manager will recognize the value to you bring to the company and will remove unreasonable obstacles to bringing more value. A virtuous manager will also be looking at your value to the company in the longer term, including whether you would be more valuable in a different role.
  21. Yes, for some time captchas have been used to verify machine learning (as has efforts like Amazon Turk). It doesn't have to be for a sinister purpose, but for the most part when machines get better at recognizing street addresses and license plates, it can be used for good things or bad things.
  22. Indeed, I was answering the "what is female" question in an objective, if somewhat snarky, way. Your question on "what is feminine" is a question about behavior, and that's going to be subjective, of course.
