Want. One of these would look pretty nice on my jeep. Also, how much coin would it take to get an FDR ad on a NASCAR vehicle like the dogecoin people were able to do?

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
mangodrink replied to hannahbanana's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
This series has been real quality so far. Way of Kings was fantastic. I enjoyed Words of Radiance as well, but maybe it was a bit overly-long. It didn't have the sense of wonder found in Way of Kings, but then it makes up for it by expanding the scope of the story like tenfold. I really have no idea where Sanderson will take these books. And there's 8(!!!) left. Some things were a tiny bit predictable in the books, Kaladin can be absurdly whiny and Shallan gets on my nerves sometimes, but overall I really enjoy the books. -

If a little kid was kicking Mike Tyson in the shin and then Tyson knocked the kid on his ass is he defending himself? That's what the situation seems like. -

Good stuff. Man, are youtubers finicky. "You didn't address how X attacked Y in 1997 so I know you're a liar and your entire video is invalid!" Like, if Stef doesn't mention some exact incident/situation they have in their head they get upset and label the entire thing untrue. So, really, even if the presentation was 3 hours long with hundreds of sources they would still play the whack-a-mole game of saying, "oh yeah? Convenient you didn't mention THIS you fraud!" Gotta stop reading youtube comments. Blah. -

That is a terrific flick and it's kind of eerie seeing the similarities between PSH's character in that film and how similar it is to his own real personal life, especially in regard to the heroin addiction.- 20 replies

Welllllllllllllll... since you didn't specify I'll try and list some of each genre.Non-fiction: Fingerprints of the Gods(ancient civilization speculatory type book), Lost City of Z(guy gets obsessed with old timey explorer Percy Fawcett and his idea of there being a formerly huge city within the Amazon rainforest. Very interesting.) Regular fiction: The Brothers Karamazov or basically anything by Dostoevsky. He's kinda a good writer. Atlas Shrugged because if you are a human you should read this book.Fantasy: Malazan Book of the Fallen(this series is 10 books long, 9 of which are massive tomes. But if you're interested at all in fantasy this is as good as it gets) Sci-fi: The Forever War(vietnam in space. Probably still the best sci-fi novel I've read. Fairly quick read as well), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy(good mostly harmless fun)

Psychological thriller movie suggestions
mangodrink replied to Microwave's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - British Cold War era spy flick. Mulholland Drive - just watch it. Total mind bender. Classic David Lynch Cache - French flick about a guy screwing w/ a family. This movie will fuck you up. Primer - incredibly well done and wonky time travel flick. You'll need to watch it twice. Shutter Island - Scorcese and Leo. That should be enough. No Country for Old Men - can't recommend enough. Dark thriller where every aspect is top notch. Direction/acting/story, everything. Also, Tommy Lee Jones. There Will Be Blood - More of a character study film, but I always think No Country and this movie should be watched back-to-back because they are easily the two best movies of that year. The HBO series True Detective sounds right up your alley as well. Very dark storyline, only eight one hour long episodes and it is probably the best single season of any show I've ever watched. It is absurdly good and the acting is phenomenal. I can try and think of more.- 20 replies

I'd also highly recommend Hardcore History. Just about every episode is multiple hours long and basically an audiobook. He makes the format engaging with quotes and historical accounts and trying to imagine what it would be like to live in the era of the subject: like being a soldier in Hannibal's army crossing the Alps or what living in Roman society at their peak would be like or having to fight on the Eastern Front in WW2, it's all great stuff. Carlin is kinda libertarian too, which doesn't hurt.

So I was pondering this briefly...
mangodrink replied to CallMeViolet's topic in Atheism and Religion
A religious person's motivation to do 'good' is largely punitive in nature. They are kind/charitable to others because that is what God expects from them and if you don't act in that manner then you're going against one of his edicts where the end of that road of punishment is always going to be eternal damnation, so it's probably best to just do as he says. Sounds a bit like a parent/child 'do as i say otherwise you get the belt' type of relationship where you're just going to do whatever they tell you to do to ensure your own safety. But does the motivation of the person ultimately really matter? If a Christian and an atheist each give $100 to a homeless shelter, is one more valid than the other because of the differing motivations behind the act? The end result is the same - the shelter gets the money and someone is helped and the mindset of the person never even comes into play. So, the good is still being accomplished regardless of why they did it in the first place, so in that vein a religious person could still accomplish good things because they are affecting reality in a real, tangible way even if a voice in their head told them to do it. Not sure where I'm going with this. I'm about five deep right now. -
What other Philosophers do you listen/watch/read?
mangodrink replied to chrispy's topic in General Messages
Any have any other good philosophy podcasts they listen to? There's quite a few out there, but most of them are trash and unimpressive. Either the host is annoying or he's British. Brutal. The best one I've found outside of FDR is the Partially Examined Life, where it's normally three guys that pick a philosopher for the month and read certain areas of his work and then sort of have a roundtable discussion about it for a couple hours. They really go in depth on these guys(to the point of absurdity sometimes) and they have hit just about every major philosopher you could think of from Aristotle to Ayn Rand. I was not impressed with the Ayn Rand episode because it was obvious they did not respect her and spent the first few minutes making the typical jokes at her expense, but it's worth a listen I guess. Overall each episode I've listened to so far has been entertaining and even valuable, so I'd recommend it.If I was reading them correctly, their next episode will be on Robert Nozik, which could be interesting. Also, they cuss sometimes and that makes me happy. -

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
mangodrink replied to hannahbanana's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
I am constantly seeing this series getting bashed(mostly on /r/books) which makes me more inclined to check it out. It's always called simplistic and then joking how the author wants to be Ayn Rand, which to me is incredibly annoying because most people who shit on Rand haven't read dick about her in my experience. I've always thought a sort of individualist story would translate well to fantasy, so I'll read it eventually. Gotta finish these massive Malazan books first. -
From one of the more recent ones that I liked: "Sin is taking your self-esteem hostage and then selling it back to you for money."

Hello. I intended to start posting a while ago, but get easily sidetracked. I've been writing this long winded diatribe on something I saw on facebook for the last few days and wanted to share it on one of the topical forums, but figured I should at least post a little bit and feel out the community before doing that. So, hi. I am a general liker of things. I live in the land of La Follette where the night is dark and full of terrors. I drink beer, eat meat, yell at people on Walking Dead, play a mandolin so badly you'd rather be stabbed, read dorky fantasy novels and stare deeply into the eyes of my Aaron Rodgers fathead each night for comfort before falling into a tender sleep. You now know me. Let's be pals.
