The article is not very helpful. I imagine everyone is on a sociopath scale. The reason you introspect is because your identity is not set. Someone who does not introspect is someone who knows what they are or is indifferent to others. Everyone is willing to cheat depending on their circumstances. I think the test of sociopathy is how maleable your identity is. This i imagine requires a lot on introspection to keep track of what your current self would do.

The atlas shrugged comment is quite striking. Remember when the motor factory implemented "the plan" the conscientious people reduced their burden on everyone else by cuting expenses while the irresposible took on more. I think we are seeing that on a national scale.

I can see how i was unclear. I was speaking more about immigration laws and the sort. Of course people are free to institute any rule on their personal property as long as it doesn't violate NAP. You can put up a sign in your yard saying no muslim allowed if that is what you want.

Its fine if you act individually based on generalites. Its a different thing to create rules based on those generalities.

The question is too vague and possibly ambiguous.

Your experience is similar to mine, so i will tell you what is working for me now. I started moving towards short term goals. Things like writing a little idea down. Planning what i need to get done this week or month. Looking for better job. Though its a temporary solution, it helps me feel much better till I can afford to buckle down for self work. All you need is one change at a time and next thing you know, you are looking to reaching that next phase, which makes life suck a lot less.

You got here before me. Damn.

I did not want to post this, but i think it needs to be said. I see a lot of comments about what the west is and what the non-white refugees are. None of these individuals chose their race, ethnicity, and family of origin.

I am sorry for what you went through, Your subjective experience is not proof of anything. Even if your experience is compatible with a pre-existing narrative, it could just be your interpretation of an indescribable experience.

Getting to the Truth - is logic & reason the only way??
labmath2 replied to Pelafina's topic in Philosophy
There is only one problem with your entire post, you did not look up definitions of truth, logic and evidence. Truth and evidence are intrinsically linked, as truth is that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality, and evidence is the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid. Now logic gets a bit more complicated, reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity. It doesn't appear that logic is restricted to some particular method, but it must adhere to strict principles of validity. Of course the question is what are these strict principles of validity, that is where things get a bit more complicated. As for the last question, intuition, the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning, is better or worse in what sense. To determine if something is better or worse, there has to be some measurable quality, unless you want to intuitively say one is better or worse than the other, which is sort of screwy. -
I recommend John Searle's philosophy of language lecture series on youtube. The way i've found that works is to require people use precise and clear language when communicating ideas. Think of something like "women are being hypersexualized in the media." Understanding that statement hinges on one word "hypersexualized." I bet most people gloss over such expressions in conversations without asking for definitions. As a joke try coming up with definitions of hypersexual, it gets funny.

Tonight, it suddenly occurred to me everything will get blamed for he attacks. No one will ask why children are inflicted with mystical nonsense and damaged as adults to the point that they are willing to engage in this kind of behavior. In the weeks to come many more innocents will likely die in the knee jerk reaction that will not attack the root of the problem.

I am trying to do some analysis of the data myself. I have crime stats for over 8000 cities from the FBI website (table 8), but i am not sure if you graphed all the cities in your graphs. For the murder rate, is that total number of murders or some other measure (i.e. murder per 100,000 inhabitants? Are you just googling the racial distribution for the cities or are you using some specific site for the race %? Thanks in advance. -
Truth is Relative (Not Subjective) or the Coherence Theory of Truth
labmath2 replied to Josh F's topic in Philosophy
I think the idea you are communicating has to do with models. Math, language, scientific method are all models. The confusion, i think, stems from the way we think about them as true in some fundamental sense. They are ways of approaching problems. In the math case, one model is more generally applicable than the other. -
This sounds a lot like ontological argument.

I think you only touched on the weaker vetsions of this argument. There is the "when you have a child and you see how hard it is, you will understand." Then the "The reason your child talks back (or some other behavoir they deem ungood) is because of your inadequate parenting." The final "you turned out fine because of what we did. So even if you parent better than us, its because we did better than our parents so its only natural you will be a better parent."

I really hope i get a response to how you got the correlationĀ® values and what the significance(p) of those values are. I can try doing it myself, but i can only get the significance on excell using a regression line analysis function(Linest), colloquially referred to as best fit line. The corelation value from that is different from the correlation value using the correlation function(Correl). I don't know how to get the significance from the correlation function(Correl). -

Just out of curiosity, did you use best fit plot or an actual correlation coefficient equation to calculate the r value. Do you happen to know the significance (P value) of the correlation coefficient? -

That is true, there are other factors. Its just an example. There are a variety of reasons that could explain such differences like laws and presence of cops. Its why i asked if they knew how to do regression analysis to try and rule out other factors. They can also do a test of the significance of the correlation coefficient. I am not very statistically savvy, but I am reading about things like that now and its very interesting stuff. -

None of the coefficient values had confident intervals. One thing that also sticks out is the data for District of Columbia. Just based on that alone i would guess that population density affects murder rates. The data for other places are all presented by state. Does murder rate change significatly between NYS and NYC? If its much higher in NYC then it suggests population density also agfects murder rates. To my knowledge blacks generally live in densely populated areas so this could affect their numbers. This is just one example. I am not sure if you know how to do regression analysis which would rule out other factors. -
